The central question this film poses is clear - what kind of woman do modern lesbians want to be represented by? Will she be a conventional ..straight-looking.. beauty or a more stereotypical boyish woman? Or perhaps a tomboy inbetweener. This is truly survival of the prettiest - contestants move through the heats via text and online voting. Interestingly, at the time of writing the two front runners going into the final arguably represent both ends of the feminine / masculine spectrum.The format of ..Lesbian Beauty.. is fresh and innovative. The filmmakers, Marina Jankovic and Mo Saha, made a wise decision not to follow a heat-by-heat reality style structure. Instead, we begin at the end .. the grand final of the ..Lesbian Role Model.. event. We learn about the motives and aspirations of the characters through a series of flashback-style cuts - and there are certainly some characters in this film.The contestants featured range from astrophysicists, carpenters to a bona fide Miss World contender. Individual reasons for participating in the contest vary from entering for a dare to the potential of meeting a girlfriend through the event. It is clear that their mere collective participation in this event succeeds in challenging stereotypes and false representations of the lesbian community. In that sense, this event is a culturally significant happening. It is probably for this reason that ..dykons.. Skin and Peaches are happy to offer their comment on the event in the film...Lesbian Beauty.. also hints at some of the commercial interests at play. The organisers of the Role Model event are the most influential mediums of the lesbian world - g3 magazine, leading lesbian bar The Candy Bar and online dating site Gaydargirls.com. The organisers have tapped into a desire in within the lesbian community to challenge how they are represented and have created a fun ,sexy and engaging event to meet that need...Lesbian Beauty.. is a revelation.
