B R O K O F

the man named BROKOF was said to be a gambler. a happy go lucky. charming. he was told to be a gypsie at heart who deserted and fled the nazis three times to make his way home from the ostfront to see his wife giving birth to their child. again and again they caught him somewhere and stood him back into battle. finally, like many others he was used as a human mine detector and spread to dust somewhere on the island of krim.
rocco and fabian met in school. rocco wrote letters on the fingerboard of the bass that fabian was doomed to play after they agreed that he would be the worst possible choice for a singer worldwide. they found a choir girl to sing instead. soon fabian was bored and angry about being forced to play bass, bought a guitar with six strings on it, wrote first songs and left that band. rocco came along.
they tried a couple of formations, toured as a duo and played with a lot of different people who had a lot of different things to think about. after moving to berlin they met christian who would later be drummer in BROKOF. because he was a learned carpenter he built a pair of monitor stands for the first recording studio they would start. it was a beautiful one room studio called B-140 where bands like Quarks, Contriva, Ragazzi and Das Zuckende Vakuum recorded.
they got to know Arne who played in a band they recorded.
In 2003 they started their second studio and called it POPSCHUTZ. rocco came up with that name while they carried their things out of the old studio. Christian was with them now. they built the place themselves, with help and money from friends and future customers. bands like Fotos, Quarks, the Boggs, the Aim of Design is to define Space, Kokon, Ragazzi, AchtungLiebeAutomat, Goodheart Boutique and Sorry Gilberto would record there. they even had mc 5 come for a day
rocco got steadily deeper into the recording thing finding his calling that one might have already guessed, seeing the kid and teenager wiring turntables to microphones and stereos in his room and all the while listening in awe to silvery waves of air. he would take part in bigger productions of other studios with bands like Die Einstürzenden Neubauten or the Manic Street Preachers.
fabian meanwhile wrote first songs for BROKOF and started to play solo shows, supporting acts like Quarks and Chris Whitley.
arne came to the studio more and more often and stealthily became a member of the POPSCHUTZ crew by making himself indispensible.
an old habit of playing music together that did not follow any song structure or reasonable scheme, just for the fun and hell of it lived up again.
when in january 2007 fabian was about to cancel a BROKOF - gig because the two musicians he is supposed to play the gig with cannot make it, his friends offered to play the gig with him. as soon as they try the first BROKOF songs they can hardly believe their luck. it works like it never had before.
In June they had their first release, a split EP called SORRY GILBERTO vs BROKOF on Goldrausch-Records.
they love to play live.
right now they are building their new studio (see construction time blog) and then will record their first album.
