About Me

Free Bananas began as a trio in the summer of 2005, rocking the cover songs out in the streets.
Now, it is only me. And now I make the music I really want to make. I am largely a self-taught musician, and I have played the guitar for nine years. Only recently have I developed as a drummer, bassist, and exploratory musician.
I write songs and record them in my living room.
Like I said, Free Bananas used to be a trio. Free Bananas then became my plaything where I would record nearly unlistenable folk experimentations. Further on, I would record even more harshly unlistenable music in noise experimentation, which became my album called (radio edit). (do you want a copy?) The turning point in my songwriting came when I moved into the same house as a cello. I played that thing until my fingers could pluck no more. Thus was the beginning of my album Pancake Music, my latest full-length effort. It was not my cello, so I bought myself a beautiful double bass. My interest in percussion comes from my experience with African drumming and Samba Ja. Now it all this comes together in a fancifully haphazard way to create that sound which is mine (which is really just an amalgamation of my influences.) Music makes me see things. Thanks for reading.

Influences: Woody Guthrie, Nina Simone, Devendra Banhart, Beck, Joanna Newsom, Scout Niblett, Samba Ja, West Africa, Brazil, Son House, John Zorn, Fred Frith, Dock Boggs, Oregon, New York City
Sounds Like: Songs written in my own little world while taking inspiration from all over the musical spectrum. What tends to happen though is music that lies somewhere between Tom Waits and Woody Guthrie. Sounds like country-jazz-blues-folk-ballad singalong-freakpop-slightlyoutoftune-improvised-desert music. Got it?
