About Me

Over 3800 blog views and counting! Thank you, MySpace blog readers!Hey look... the 23 in Brisbane is open again! Bring on the bands!!

My Interests

Watching cool bands perform live. Hiking through nature's scenic wonders. Silent movies. Snakes. Old time radio. Giant redwood trees. Clif Builder bars. Niles Canyon. The banjo. Watching pro bull riders on cable TV. Gelato. Rain and fog. My motorcycle boots. Doonesbury. Mendocino. Snap peas. Brunettes with bangs. Cult movies. The surf, ska and rockabilly stations on AOL Radio. Truckee. Girls in vintage clothing. True crime stories. Chocolate mousse. People with retro style. Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps. A deep rumblin', twangin', reverbin' guitar. Art nouveau. Art deco. Oatmeal cookies. 1950s EC comics. San Francisco history. Giant waves crashing against giant rocks. Burning incense until the smoke detector goes off. Almost anything that's appalling. Butta-beepa-da-boppa-da-boop.

I'd like to meet:

Everyone apearing in my Upcoming Shows Calendar (see below)! And everybody else who has the good taste to come to these shows! Each of these bands carries my personal stamp of approval, so step right up, neighbors! You can't lose!

Music:

Pop-punk, ska, surf and rockabilly! Especially rockabilly. And ragtime. The music of the 1920s and '30s. Old reggae and rocksteady. Western swing. Hillbilly boogie of the '40s and early '50s. Old-time string bands. Pretty much everything that's wildly unpopular right now. And I still like the same '80s new wave and alternative stuff that I liked way back when, before Nirvana came along and ruined everything.

Movies:

I usually either watch cult-type movies I nearly know by heart (HAROLD AND MAUDE, GOODFELLAS, THE BLUES BROTHERS, THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, EL TOPO, STRANGER THAN PARADISE), or vintage movies, the older the better. I love silents and Pre-Codes, but I'm up for almost anything from the golden age. I'm also into pre-1935 B-westerns, no matter how bad they are.

Television:

MY NAME IS EARL. THE OFFICE. REAL TIME WITH BILL MAHER. BIG LOVE. ENTOURAGE. SCRUBS. NIP/TUCK. PINKS. Bull riding on the Versus channel. Anything with giant, dangerous reptiles in it.

Books:

The last three books I've read: SOUTHWEST SHUFFLE by Rick Kienzle. LONE STAR SWING by Duncan McLean. FAST FOOD NATION by Eric Schlosser.

Heroes:

Tim McCoy. Jerry Jampolsky. Jimmy Carter. Edith Cavell. Farid al-Din Attar. Paul Volcker. Zig Ziglar. Ron Ridenhour. Corrie Ten Boom. Alejandro Jodorowsky. The Dalai Lama. Warren Buffett. Rachel Carson. Leo Buscaglia. Yusef Islam.

I Met the Zodiac Killer (Maybe)

Nobody ever caught the Zodiac Killer. He terrorized the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1960s and early '70s, killing at least several people and mailing taunting letters to the police and t...

They Tore the Playhouse Down

It started out so nice, and then it all went to hell. Jazz (which in those days was still fun) and country music (which in those days was still authentic) had gotten together in Texas, creating...

Hollywood Highlights

Thirteen golden memories I'll always treasure from this weekend's road trip to Hollywood: 1. Fat Elvis impersonator wandering around the hotel's underground parking garage, wearing sunglasses, ...

More Stuff That Happened in Bars

Annie's Social Club is run by an actual Annie. There's a picture behind the bar of a Little Orphan Annie with a full sleeve of tattoos, but that's not our Annie. The authentic Annie is a good-n...

Drugs, Violence and Sweet, Sweet Music

It's been tough for the local musicians lately. You probably heard about Roisin Isner, the teenage drummer for Tinkture, who lost her index finger when a firecracker was tossed in her direction...

My Ghost Story

For a long time, I wasn't going to tell this story, but I'm going to go ahead and share it. I've only told this story to eight people before this. You don't have to believe it, but it's comple...

What Can Go Wrong When You're in the Middle of Nowhere

I hit the road for northern Mendocino County a couple of weeks back, staying at the Howard Creek Ranch Inn at Westport and spending the days hiking around. Yes, readers, I agree with you: hikin...

Bigfoot, a Bad Bite, and a Botched Burial

All This, and Clueless Too: Rapper "Snoop Dogg" can't understand why British authorities won't let him into their country, to share what he calls his "message of love and harmony." Evident...
