THE INDIAN SCHOOL
1894-1915
Here is a popular postcard in 1907. Under the picture are the words
Touch-i-goo - Indian Squaw.
You should know that to call a woman a “squaw” is a very insulting thing to do, but most Americans don’t know that. “Touch-i-goo” is a made up name that doesn’t mean anything; but probably anybody who saw this card would learn two incorrect things about Native American people and language. That’s one way that pieces of stereotype information can spread ignorance and bad feelings.
The person, who sent the card from Syracuse, NY in 1907, wrote this message on the front.
“I am sending you on to-day’s train an Indian Baby in a papoose carrier. It is “good” and will not keep you awake nights anytime it does not behave stick pins in it and it will be quiet. Watch and wait for it!”
Perhaps the writer of that message is “just kidding”. But it is a fact that Indian children were treated very badly by other Americans; and that many Americans believed that it was perfectly okay to mistreat Indian children, because they were Indian.
Now it is not only illegal to mistreat someone because of his or her race, but it is also illegal to mistreat any child.
Things have changed for the better because many, many people of all different races realized that both racism and child abuse are always wrong.

WHITE BUFFALO CALF WOMAN
Good News
On Nov. 12, a perfectly normal brown buffalo at the zoo gave birth to a white baby bull calf - an occurrence that zoo owner Jill Herring said is about 1 in 10 million.
The Legend of the White Buffalo
One summer a long time ago, the seven sacred council fires of the Lakota Sioux came together and camped. The sun was strong and the people were starving for there was no game. Two young men went out to hunt. Along the way, the two men met a beautiful young woman dressed in white who floated as she walked. One man had bad desires for the woman and tried to touch her, but was consumed by a cloud and turned into a pile of bones. The woman spoke to the second young man and said, "Return to your people and tell them I am coming." This holy woman brought a wrapped bundle to the people. She unwrapped the bundle giving to the people a sacred pipe and teaching them how to use it to pray. "With this holy pipe, you will walk like a living prayer," she said. The holy woman told the Sioux about the value of the buffalo, the women and the children. "You are from Mother Earth," she told the women, "What you are doing is as great as the warriors do." Before she left, she told the people she would return. As she walked away, she rolled over four times, turning into a white female buffalo calf. It is said after that day the Lakota honored their pipe, and buffalo were plentiful. (from John Lame Deer's telling in 1967). Many believe that the buffalo calf, Miracle, born August 20, 1994 symbolizes the coming together of humanity into a oneness of heart, mind, and spirit.

A Moment Lost
White Feather danced on meadows rainbow
Pedals in a symphony of pastel expression
Her long ebony hair captured by the wind
Arms out stretched spinning in springs bliss
Her wolven senses drink in her spirit world
Around and around like a plains twister
Love has captured her infant heart
And spread her out in innocence
She calls her distant lover
Walk with me on plateaus high
Share with me my heart
Tell me of our future journey
Fill me with your light
She must return to duties call
Stand up and become her former
Back to her responsibility
Back to the higher plains
A wisp on winds wings
Far beyond the physical
Carried away to act out
Upon a breezes report
In slumber they meet
A dreams walk retreat

White Feather Run

Waterfalls and painted leaves Sunset’s red as they can be Where time stands still And we believed

It’s been so easy in my mind to go back to a different time When I was yours And you were mine

White Feather please what have we done? I can’t go back I’m all undone If I just knew The way back home I wouldn’t feel so alone I need you back Where we belong White Feather run

You told me you could never run An outlaw’s girl you won’t become Always moving in the night A desperado with no life

I couldn’t bear to watch you cry I left you standing wondering why How could I leave without goodbye?

White Feather please What have we done? I can’t go back I’m all undone If I just knew The way back home I wouldn’t feel so alone I need you back Where we belong White Feather run

I’ll ride to you both day and night I’ll find a way to change your mind So we can learn to live as one

So say goodbye and let it go We’re better off in Mexico White Feather run where life is slow

White Feather please What have we done? I can’t go back I’m all undone If I just knew The way back home I wouldn’t feel so alone I need you back Where we belong White Feather run

~~~DALTON~~~
Dalton gazed out High above creation A precipice that had Become his solitude His sanctuary
Calling his beloved In astral request Longing for the passion That eluded him In his world of chaos
Companion to thieves Enemy of the self-righteous Repentance too painful A heart of stone That thirsted for forgiveness
My love My companion Find me in my Time of need Forsake me not
White Feather descended Leaving Shadow Land Heart pumping in Her transformation Arms outstretched
Their heart whole again Dalton’s misery vanished In instant relief All was whole again
My savior My heart My undeniable Everything
Feather of courage,
a young mans tale.
As he climbs the jagged rocks, he hears what Grandpa said. other braves have made that climb, and some of them are dead.
This bird of prey will fight you son, she has a warriors heart, her talons will cut to the bone, her beak is just as sharp
The mountain top is her domain, and she protects it all. She will fight you to the death, and try to make you fall.
Take from her the feather, don't you harm the bird, or nest. If you survive, you walk in pride, for this will be your test.
It's a test of courage, and the strength your spirit holds. and when you wear the feather, other braves will know your bold.
For only can the strong of heart, fight her in her lair. and take from her the feather, that will lift her in the air.
You will have to fight her, even on your way back down. and you will have some battle scars, before you hit the ground.
This is not an easy test, but wasn't meant to be. Every man must show his strength, and courage sets him free.
Now walk in pride upon the path, and hold your head up high. Show that feather in your hair, for you were not denied.
"From the Cherokee Feast of Days"
Sisters are such special people. They can outthink, outdo and love us better than anyone in the world. They stand with us in difficult times, rejoice with us in the good times, and talk to us with loving words to lift us up. The Cherokee calls these special people their a na da lv –beloved sisters. Sisters never complain when we get lost in time and space – never forget to welcome us home. Sisters don’t have to be blood kin – for what does that matter when the relationship is stronger than ancestry. Love transcends so many dry places and makes us family by choice. What could be better than to be a beloved sister?
THE LEGEND OF THE TEXAS BLUEBONNET
Stars-in-the-sky, young Indian maiden,
a lovely sight to see.
She lived there, somewhere in Texas,
with her tribe, and family.
All the warriors, young, and old,
were in a hungry mood.
They went out and search the plains,
but they would find no food.
The Summer drought, had forced the deer,
into the hills, and higher ground.
The buffalo was never seen,
bad omen coming down.
Keema was their Holy man,
they listened to his words.
Keema prayed for many days,
bring back the rain, and herds.
Tatanka was to go unseen,
Comanche people starved?
Great Spirit can you hear my plee,
Keema prayed with all his heart.
The women, and the children,
built a pile of wood, and sticks.
They did just what the old man said,
he was using all his tricks.
He took a burning hunting bow,
and threw it on the stack.
The fire burned religious flames,
to bring the herds all back.
Stars-in-the-Sky would sacrifice,
the thing she held so dear.
The doll she loved, and cherished most,
a birthday gift last year.
Her Father caught all the hides,
they used to make the cloths.
He painted them with berry juice,
and petals from the rose.
Her Mother made the braided hairs,
she plucked from her own head.
The doll was such a pretty sight,
she always took to bed.
Her younger brother Bright Eye's,
added to the dolls array.
He gave a Blue Jays Feather,
that he found the other day.
Tears in her eyes, and late at night,
her family all asleep.
She snuck out of her sleeping furs,
and through the night she creep-ed.
She found her way up to the cliff,
and the fire Keema made.
She put into the dying embers,
her doll she gently laid.
She would sacrifice her doll,
for her tribe and family.
If it would bring Tatanka back,
she did it happily.
The next morning she awoke,
commotion everywhere.
She ran out through the tepee flap,
and everyone just stair-ed.
All across the prairie,
and the hills were covered too.
grew these pretty flowers,
everyone was colored blue.
They were the color of the Jay,
the Feather in her hair.
Sacrificed the night before,
the doll that she placed there.
The heards came back, the tribe survived,
and everyone lived on it.
The State flower to this day,
is the Texas Bluebonnet
THE TRAIL OF TEARS
TEARS AND DEATH
END OF THE TRAIL
~ PAINTING TITLE ~ MORNING TEARS
During the harsh winter of 1838-39 thousands of Cherokee were forced to leave their mountain homes and marched overland to Indian Territory. During the forced march across the snow covered land, over four thousand of the Cherokees died. The hardships suffered by the Cherokee people as they were forced to walk what later would be named The Trail of Tears, to a new home in Indian Territory, would be forever remembered. Like the people who took advantage of the Cherokee Removal the Ravens in the foreground of this painting tear apart a scarf that has Cherokee Nation written in embroidery
