If ever one artist could sweep across the best of musical genres, plucking inspiration from all of the greats, she would be known as Sandra Small. Sandra was born in Naples, Italy born from an Italian mother and African American father. She carries a classic rock-funk-soul sound as deep and as wide as her varied experiences and is consistently compared to greats like Betty Wright, Erykah Badu, Lenny Kravitz, Prince and Sade.
Sandra is currently in the studio working on her next album scheduled for release in early next year. This album is a follow-up to the nine-song EP, “World Gone Crazyâ€, released in 2006. Here Sandra sings about struggle, hope and freedom, but with a focus on “Rebirthâ€. It is a story of soul searching and resolution, release and inspiration with genuine poetic lyricism.
The Small World Band is itself an infusion of genres, with talent history covering every era and flavor of contemporary classic funk, jazz and rock music. Band members have played with Luther Vandross, Angie Stone, Keith Sweat, and Chaka Khan. The band—aside from Sandra’s vocals and acoustic guitar—includes Piano-Organist Jamal Peoples, Drummer & Bassist Larry Peoples Sr., Lead Guitarist Mike Campbell and Cecil Hodge also on the keys.
Performing for her family and friends since she could walk, Sandra began to take her talent seriously at thirteen and hired a private teacher. She was immersed in the great music of acts like James Brown, Chubby Checker, Sade, Mozart, Prince, Michael Jackson, Sting, Led Zeppelin throughout her youth. Sandra didn’t begin actively working on her career until she was 26 and realized that it was make-or-break time. She composed a band and began working seriously on her music. It was in Bassist Dan Ehrlich’s studio that Sandra recorded her first demo and met the other great musicians who would become The Small World Band. Finally, Sandra had a backdrop to her sound that was just as deeply rock-funk-soul as she.
Sandra has always been an artist who studies her craft. She remains hungry to continually learn more and more about the science of making musical masterpieces, exploring the incredible ranges of her talent. She plans to continue making great music and to establish herself as an international artist in the next decade, releasing at least three albums during that time. The band is currently in the studio weaving together the new album. Fans of true music are patiently waiting.
