Britgirl Abroad play uplifting, original, melodic pop and heartfelt ballads and create a stage show that is as colourful as the music is catchy. British-born Kate is the frontwoman whose songs (co-written with guitarist Andi) combine humour with vulnerability, and showcase a truly remarkable singing voice. From pop songs about
cyber boyfriends to heartbreak ballads, Britgirl Abroad songs all have something in common;
warm harmonies, catchy melodies and real-life lyrics.
Kate left for Germany in 2001 and has now lived abroad long enough to feel foreign everywhere she goes. “I’m the English
girl in Germany and ‘the girl who lives in Germany’ in the UK. Men are always foreign,
situations are always foreign, so this gives me loads of ideas for lyrics, both observational
comic lyrics and more serious melancholy textsâ€.
Her tendency to mispronounce German words, talk 'Denglish' (mixture of English and
German) and charming ability to tell a good story about her latest encounters abroad endear
Kate to the audience. “I love making people laugh, like when I try to tune my guitar on stage
while talking to the audience. I am an amusing multi-taskerâ€.
Kate’s co-songwriter is producer and guitarist Andi, a man with a musical mission who opened his first studio by
pulling a second-hand 24 channel mixing desk behind his moped to a disused factory. As
sound engineer, Andi has gone on to produce numerous albums, commercials, musicals,
and as guitarist he has played hundreds of concerts in Germany and abroad. His gift of
combining harmonies with goose bump-inducing melodies is exceptional. Composing songs
with Kate is a process like exploring a musical wonderland – inspired by each other, new
colours, forms and ideas are continually appearing when they start to sing and play.
Kate is supported by singer Marla with her own distinctive stage presence and voice that sets the mood for the songs. Marla's unconventional life from the mountains of Switzerland to the sunny climes of
Californian and back to Germany is evident in her interesting character and her soulful voice.
Smoky yet blissfully smooth, her voice gives the songs a special edge. Always getting into
mischief, she is foxy, funny and fabulous.
Last but not least is guitarist Matt. Expressive and excessive, his performance gives the
britgirl sound the final polish. With lots of gigs all over Europe he has refined his individual
way of playing – strong and emotional – giving Britgirl Abroad its powerful face.
