About Me

Myspace For Girls Only - MyGirlySpace.com
Well, I'm a southern gal first and foremost so I'm all about etiquette and sweet tea among other southern staples. However, I am forever influenced by my stints in Washington D.C. and the beautiful Bay Area of California, not to mention my new home, New York City. Just consider me an freckle-faced, Black urban hippie if you can imagine what that's all about.
I'm a very proud auntie to 7 adorable nieces and nephews (Deondre, Chandler, Brian J., Joshua, Jordan, Cameron and little Bree Bree). I think that's enough grandkids for my parents, right? I can't forget my roommate Moya, the Cat Princess of Brooklyn.
I'm no longer a public defender in practice although I suppose I'll always be one in my heart. I've moved on to the policy world doing criminal justice reform work so I'm still good for random info on sex offenders, the mentally ill or the Supreme Court (or all three).
What I like the most in a person is a sense of humor (because I love to laugh) and the ability to have good conversations whether its about cartoons or politics. But I don't watch the news or read the paper so don't expect me to ever know what's going on in the world.
So that's me. What about you?

My Interests

I spend way too much time working but when I'm not, I like to cook and bake and I'll walk just about anywhere (to counter said cooking and baking). I also LOVE tennis (couch commentator only) and you can always find me chatting with my buddies, reading, obsessing over music or exploring the city

I'd like to meet:

Anyone and Everyone!

Music:

Who are the folks I'm into these days... Well, I still prefer electronica and industrial rock but I also enjoy hip-hop, classical, R&B, jazz and lots of other stuff. I also totally dig live music especially live rock and live jazz. Trent Reznor is my god as is Bjork. They're the great composers of my generation. I also love Basement Jaxx, Ravel, Esthero, Cibo Matto and Soul Coughing (RIP), Low Fidelity Allstarts, The Streets, Thrill Kill Kult and the Lords of Acid (of course), Meshell N'Degeocello, Prince, Beethoven, Tori Amos and Portishead.

Movies:

I'm not really into movies--I pretty much stick to the indies. These days I've been hitting documentaries and catching up on the Oscar nominees of years past. But I still love Bollywood and Bill Murray and Heathers is the best movie ever made.

Television:

I don't watch too much T.V. either but I stick to my stories and anything that involves dancing. I'm trying to catch up on Heroes and The Shield with moderate success. I'm also a bit obsessed with The Discovery Channel and I'll pretty much watch any reality programming that Bravo churns out. When is Project Runway starting up again?

Books:

I love science fiction and horror. It's some of the best literature out there, period. Octavia Butler is excellent as is Ursula LeGuin. They represent the kind of science fiction that I enjoy. I'm also a big Stephen King fan. He's a wonderful storyteller. I'm currently reading Day Watch and still trying to muddle my way through Middlesex. Anyone have any suggestions for me?

Heroes:

I enjoy a good cheesesteak...or maybe a nice BLT.

My Blog

RIP Octavia Butler

I know she passed away a few months back but I still find myself reflecting on how sad it is to lose such an amazing woman. One of the first things a friend asked me after she died was if I had read ...

Busted

"I'll watch Desperate Housewives, the OC or any stupid sitcom if you'd put at least one Black person in it" Sound familiar? Well damn, that means I have to start watching Desperate Housewives. So...

Damn, I love Project Runway

I don't particularly care about fashion. Regularly paying a lot of money for clothes just isn't my thing (of course, I say this after buying an $80 pair of boots today but I digress...). In fact, I ...

The Randomness of City Living...

Since the harassment must stop about me blogging I thought I'd do a little updating. And just as a reminder, when I say random, I totally mean random. Anyway, there were serveral aspects of city...
