As a kid, I was always painfully shy. I didn't want to look at anyone too long or talk to anyone, and if anyone tried to talk to me, I would hide behind my mother and stare at the floor in front of me. Even though I was shy, I always had a lot to say, but no way of expressing it. I felt that anything i had to say wasn't worth saying. Around 10 years old, something changed. I began vigorously writing my thoughts on paper and assorting the words into song. It was a perfect escape from my less than perfect world.
Throughout junior high and highschool, I continued doing the same thing. I had now become labeled a "Gothic Freak", "The black Punk Rocker Chick", or "the Rebel" and because of this, I was outcasted even more. I was used to not fitting in by now, but still had little control over my own inner demons.
My lyrics became edgier, darker, and more personal. I would read my "poems" to my English or Religion class whenever a project was due and, although I never followed the rules, my teachers would be in awe of how raw and well written my poems were. My classmates thought I was even MORE crazy now, but were all touched by my honesty and many times, there wouldn't even be a dry eye in the house....
In college, I realized that I needed to physically do something with these thoughts. Writing was one thing, but I needed an even BIGGER release of my anger and frustration. I soon began fronting the all male band The Gothic Blues Quartet.
On stage, I was a completely different person...I felt ALIVE! Being on stage was the most amazing sensation I had every experienced in my life! I had been in plays in highschool and college, but the power that comes with having a live band slamming, banging, booming, thrashing behind me was, to me, like a complete out-of-body experience!!! I then sought out Phil Minardi, a song-writer /engineer who was looking for young talent to sing a couple of his songs. A little apprehensive about my songwriting skills, he then challenged me to write a full length song. The product of this was OPEN UP. Together, he and I devised a plan to take the world by STORM and I will not stop until I do!
