ABOUT THE BOYS:
Spare Liar is a boiling pot of musical delights. Its two members are so musically different and yet complement each other so fully and seamlessly.
Lewis’ punk-rock background served him well in gaining a solid groundwork of performance skill. However several strong influences and a love for Australian culture directed these skills down an acoustic path. Given an acoustic guitar, Lewis can entertain a crowd no end. This new direction opened his eyes to a world of different music and a wave of inspiration was suddenly let through. This all led to a songwriter who can literally sit down with a guitar and sing a song from scratch. During the latter part of his school life and continued at tertiary level, Lewis has developed his vocal talent. He captivates audiences with his powerful voice that sports a punk edge with Australian charm.
The majority of Hugh’s musical life has been dominated by the classical world. He currently studies violin at the Conservatorium (Melbourne) and has been heavily involved in orchestral and chamber music. Hugh recently played at the Sydney Opera House and toured Europe with The Australian Youth Orchestra. Despite his attention to classical music, there has always been a deep fascination with the popular music world and the guitar has been more than just a hobby for many years. Hugh’s obsession with pop music goes in phases – from old-school funk to brand new hip-hop to classic rock and everything in between. His classical training has enabled him to listen in an objective way and take the aspects of each that have the most appeal.
Perhaps the reason why these two musicians gel so well is their enthusiasm to embrace each other’s art. So often the intended musical effect is a common thread, and the way this effect is achieved is a journey that is sometimes unexpected.
