The Essence of Stan:
The suffix –stan or –sthan is Persian for “land of” and Sanskrit for “Place”.
It is widely spread in many countries and regions, especially in central and south Asia where the ancient Indo-Iranians settled. The Latin equivalent of –stan is –ia, and the Germanic, –land.
When attached to geographic locations, the expression relates to “place” or “where one stands”. This was derived from the Proto-Indo-European root –sta, “to stand” - which is the source of the English word “stand”.
