About Me

I edited my profile with Thomas Myspace Editor V3.6 !
Bio
Being face to face with Elvis Presley on stage in Fort Worth, Texas at a Saturday afternoon matinee show in June 1974 was a life altering experience for one nine-year-old boy.
Throughout the show, the boy had several scarves tossed to him by Presley only to have them yanked out his hands by crazed female fans.
Eventually the boy was lifted onto the stage where he was now face to face with The King. With a slight tug, the boy pulled a light blue, sweat stained scarf off Presley’s neck. Unknown to the boy at that moment, a passionate seed for music was planted.
That young fan was Ian Roberts.
The planted seed would grow the following years as Roberts was exposed to a Fort Worth based band called TEXAS and then into his teenage years when he discovered the music of Kiss, Boston, Foreigner, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Riot, Motorhead, UFO, Saxon and Krokus to name a few.
Even though his concert experiences were limited and considered a luxury event in senior high, that didn’t stop Roberts from being an avid music fan through his final four years of public schooling. He devoured anything related to music whether signed to a record deal or an unknown local band.
It wasn’t until August 1984 as a freshly graduated high school student when his music interest was taken to another level. On that hot day in early August, Roberts witnessed for the first time a local band that had in their ranks a blazing 17-year old guitarist play a sold out all ages show at the Southern Palace inside Six Flags Over Texas. The guitarist was Darrell Abbott and the band was Pantera.
For the next several years, Roberts attended countless local Pantera shows as well as other marquee acts that were touring on the thriving national club circuit.
While in college and still actively supporting the music scene, Roberts won several awards as a budding photojournalist and continued working in the field after earning a Bachelors degree in Speech Communications. His photographic work would be published in a wide variety of publications. In 1990, he was named to the Who’s Who of American Photographers.
Eventually Roberts, the photojournalist jumped sides and began a career in sports public relations where he worked in professional hockey for several years including an internship in the NHL.
Seeking a more stable working environment, Roberts left minor league hockey where his skills as a scribe sat idle for several years.
Recently Roberts has started writing again and where he originally focused his energy into entertainment related topics.
When needed, Roberts provides publicity support for several Dallas based local bands as well as writing for several outlets where the subject matter ranges from sports to arts and entertainment.
Whether news, reviews, interviews or anything new, Roberts will write it. With an intense yearning to write, he is constantly looking for more opportunities. As a creator of the written image, Roberts maintains a simple philosophy. Everything begins with a clean slate.

My Interests

No matter how primitive, Mattel Football still ROCKS !

I'd like to meet:

Publicists, PR staffers, editors, assignment editors, copy editors, writers, reporters, photo editors, photographers, photojournalists, illustrators, tour managers, touring personnel and touring musicians when I sit down and interview them. And then one day...

Music:

Here's a sampling of what's in my CD collection.
AC/DC (Bon Scott era), Angel, Anthrax (Belladonna era), The Babys, Bad English, Behemoth, Black Sabbath, Boston (through Third Stage), The Cars, Celtic Frost, Damnation of Adam Blessing, Daylight Dies, Def Leppard (through High N’ Dry), Dimmu Borgir, DOWN, Dragonforce, Dragonlord, ELO, ELVIS, Evergrey, Exciter, Exodus, Fastway, Gamma Ray, Gammacide, Graveworm, High on Fire, House of Lords, Hypocrisy, I, Immortal, Journey, Kamelot, Kreator, Krokus (through 1983), Limbonic Art, Metallica (Cliff Burton era), Nevermore, New England, Nile, Opeth, Ozzy (Rhoads era), The Police, Primal Fear, Queen, Riot, The Rods, Rush, Sodom, Steeler, STIFF, Strapping Young Lad, Styx, Sweet, Sweet Savage, TEXAS (1973 Bell Records), Thin Lizzy, Triumph, UFO (through Mechanix), Uriah Heep, Warlord, Van Halen (Roth era), Venom, Vital Remains, YES, Zebra and material related to the Abbott Brothers, Darrell and Vince.

Ten of My Favorite Albums

Movies:

School of Rock, Finding Graceland, Detroit Rock City, Rock and Roll High School, Batman (1966), Almost Famous, History of Heavy Metal, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Dazed and Confused, Thing that You Do, The Ron Clark Story, Paulie and '61. Those are just a few of the movies in my DVD collection.
Music documentaries such as Elvis on Tour and That's the Way It Is rank high on my list. It's incredible watching the fan reaction. Unexplainable but I am glued to the screen.

Television:

When time allows the news, educational programs on PBS and major league sports on the networks. I don't watch TV enough to justify footing a bill for cable or satellite. When time doesn't allow, my source of news comes from the dot coms and nets of cnn, nbc5i, star telegram, blabbermouth and bravewords. The mighty metal sludge provides the humor.

Books:

Mainly music related biographies or autobiographies such as Fargo Rock City, Skynyrd's Rembering the Free Birds, Walk this Way on Aerosmith, Rudy Sarzo's Off the Rails, Roth's Crazy from the Heat, Ian Christie's Sound of the Beast, The Lords of Chaos and The Essential 55.
Other subject matter I enjoy reading include current events, history and sports related books. Actually I own 29 Hockey books of various topics. One of the best hockey books in my collection is Behind the Red Line by Tod Hartje. Drafted by the Winnipeg Jets, he was the first American player to suit up in Russia and play. Great reading.
The Penguins Stanley Cup run in 1991 and 1992 "Hooked" me on the sport.

I still pull out my Art History books from college time to time and read over the Greek and Roman Art sections. I do the same for my Religions of the World class I took.
