Zambia Medical and Orphan Fund

About Me

The Zambia Medical and Orphan Fund is a registered charity on the Isle of Man founded by Rebecca Vaughan, a pupil of Ramsey Grammar School and her father Dr Frank Vaughan of Snaefell Surgery. Its aims are to primarily raise money for hospitals, orphans and related community projects in the local area of Livingstone, Zambia and to also additionally donate money for UNICEF’s ‘Unite for children, Unite against AIDS’ campaign.

Rebecca and Frank volunteered in Livingstone, Zambia for the summer of 2007 in the Livingstone General Hospital, the Maramba Clinic and on projects within the community and wish to continue to present, on behalf of the charity, the money raised from various fund raising projects/events.

My Interests

“I know AIDS is out there; I have seen and lived with it. If I could speak to the world, I would thank those people that have helped children like me. Because of them I have three meals, a safe, warm place to sleep, an education, and most of all I have people around me that love and care for me. I am very thankful for that.”
Frida, an orphan living at the UNICEF-supported Anglican Children’s Project in Lusaka, Zambia.

I'd like to meet:

Zambia is one of the most promising up and coming countries of the third world. After recently receiving a US$3.9 bn debt write off in April 2005 Zambia has also been able to for the first time, provide free health care.
Politically, Zambia has always had good relations with other countries and has escaped a lot of the civil unrest which have troubled her neighbouring countries. However, Zambia suffered for much of the 80’s and 90’s due to her opposition to the apartheid in South Africa and has never really fully recovered from this.Zambia has one of the lowest life expectancies in Africa at just 32.7 years.
Zambia also has one of the highest prevelance's of HIV/AIDS in Africa with 31% of the population living with the virus.
Just 32% of the population has comprehensive knoweledge on HIV/AIDS
No. of doctors per 10 000 population in Livinsgstone is 1.2 (compared to 20 doctors to 10 000 population on the IOM)
