Melbourne businessman John So is Melbourne’s first popularly elected Lord Mayor. Born in Hong Kong, John So moved to Melbourne as a 17 year old and soon earned his science degree and Diploma of Education from the University of Melbourne. He taught science at Fitzroy High School before opening his first restaurant in Flinders Lane in 1976.One of Melbourne’s longest serving Councillors, John So has won 4 consecutive elections to the City of Melbourne since 1991. John So is passionate about promoting Melbourne and works tirelessly to facilitate business opportunities in the city, and stimulate tourism, cultural exchange and investment for Melbourne. During his term as Lord Mayor the City Council has enjoyed the lowest property rate increases in Victoria for 3 consecutive years. At the same time Melbourne has experienced its substantial property and business growth.John So’s vision for Melbourne includes creating closer links between the city and the water, whether that is the Yarra River or Docklands. He celebrates Melbourne’s expanding links with Asia, including establishing sister city relationships with Osaka Japan and Tianjin China, increasing the number of direct flights to and from Melbourne, and being an active member of the Business Partner City Network combining 12 global cities. Sound financial management and setting low annual property rates will be a priority in the next City Council.
