About Me
KingPen Biography
Somewhere, some place, some time I once read, “Music is designed to soothe a savaged beast.†Now, I don’t know if music has actually served to soothe me or to fuel me, but what I do know is that I make music to soothe the beast within others.
I was born Robert Jones, but now I am known as “KingPen.†I chose my name because the definition of a Kingpin is a key player, top dog, number one and that is what I strive to be. With all of the brilliant lyricist and purely talented artist coming out of my area, I strive to be the King of Pensacola because that would be the ultimate honor. When growing up police sirens were my story book goodnight, while the sound of gunshots served as my alarm clock. Since violence was my mistress, I decided to create “feel good music.†I want people to hear my music and be swept away by the need to get on the dance floor or loose consciousness of everyday stresses. I wanted people to forget about the problems of yesterday and the worries of today and just move their bodies; in the clubs; in the streets, I just want people to be at peace and to want to move.
I am a native of Pensacola, Florida, but I spent most of my life in Benton Harbor, Michigan. Although temptation was hard, I was able to graduate from high school and go off to college on a full basketball scholarship. I guess watching people shot and killed in front of you could kind of give you a new meaning of life. After college, I was torn between basketball and music. When I would weigh my options, all that I could hear was Cameo’s Word Up in my ear. I knew that I had to pursue my first love.
I started working hard putting myself out there more. Being 6’5†from the streets makes it a little difficult to seem like that friendly guy, but thank God that I was able to get out there and make many connections. I don’t know if even the streets could prepare me for the music game. Every time I turned a corner I met a new snake, spitting good game while snipping at my feet. I got tired of all of the industry lies so I decided to do my own thing, so RedDott Entertainment was born. Through it all, I have been strong enough to maintain managing and assisting other artist, as well as, maintaining my artist credibility.
I got with some family members and brought on board my first artist. I began working hard and running harder. I have opened for Trick Daddy, Trina, Bun B, Zero, The Last Mr. Bigg, Pastor Troy, Ying Yang Twins, Lil Flip, Pimp C, BG, Blood Raw, Lil Wayne, Juvenile, Lil Boosie, Young Buck, Yo Gotti, Down South Riders, Pliez, Yo Gotti, and a couple of other artist. RedDott Entertainment was honored with being named the 2007 Indie Label of the Year by C. Wakely for the Gainesville Music Summit.
I tell everyone “Stop Neglecting the Grind.†Many don’t understand music is not a hobby; it is a full time job. The journey that I have been on with music has had its ups and downs, but one thing that I can say is that if it ended today, I have enjoyed the ride. Please continue to support independent artist, especially those in your area. Keep your ears tuned in for the blazing, banger “Parking Lot†and remember, CONTINUE TO GRIND FOR YOUR POSITION!!!
