It is the streets, the struggle, expression, depression, light, dark, jail, the pen, heaven, hell, sex, drugs, money, liberation, education, miseducation, understanding, and misunderstanding. It is the plight of the black man and the movement of the black woman. It is generations of baggy jeans and African medallions, Bob Marley and the black panthers. We, the descendants of those who fought and struggled, who were attacked politically and personally, who were oppressed and demoralized, we now have a voice. We are the generation that can and has spoken out about what we want, when we want. We are Hip Hop. Hip Hop is not only a type of music, its a movement. Hip Hop is melodies made by the Marvin Gayes of our day and the Quincy Jones's of our time. Melodies WISELY taken from the music that moved our parents, and melodies from the deep recesses of the minds of those that always seem to keep us moving today. Hip Hop is the cardboard on which the B-Boys spin. Hip Hop is the seats filled in Madison Square Garden by die hard Jay-Z fans. Hip Hop is cornrows and dreads. Hip Hop is the movement in every black woman's hips, and the gangsta in every black mans boogie. Hip Hop is the crip walk, the chicken head and the Eastside stomp. Hip Hop is khakis with a deep crease, Tims with a couple of scuffs, Reebok classics, slouch socks, Free Pimp C tees, Pac and Biggie Tees, and dollar bandannas. The word Bitch is Hip Hop, and the word Nigga is definitely Hip Hop. Hip Hop is freestyle, battle rap, gangsta rap, soul, and spoken word. Hip Hop is poetry in motion. Hip Hop is music that makes you feel like your living somebody's story. Like you can remember the roaches in your cereal box, or the project elevators breaking down, or the nigga in the Benz never having a "Real" job. Hip Hop is a DJ buying turntables instead of a compact disc system. Hip Hop is hours in the studio, or the garage, or in your grandmamas bathroom. Hip Hop is fucking to that Outkast album Aquemini. Hip Hop is sending you man that new underground mixtape in jail. Hip Hop is not about wealth or having the baddest bitches or the best weed. Its about music.
