About Me

(Bass, Guitar, Double Bass, Songwriter)
"...when I was a child, the local hair dresser would always ask if you wanted a Beatles or a Rolling Stones (cut)..? It didn’t matter what you chose, you’d always come out with a short back and sides... Growing up in the seedy but attitudinal Essex seaside town of Clacton-on-Sea, I soon realised that music was a possible way out and a passport to the rest of the world..."
Former bassist and founder member of the Clacton based, proto-punk garage rock band, ‘The Johnny 7 Combo’.
By the end of 1977 (and at only 17) a full time member of Wreckless Eric’s band (playing bass on Eric's first LP for Stiff Records) then, at just 20 with San Francisco's Pearl Harbour (& the Explosions), working and touring extensively with The Clash and bands such as The Talking Heads and The B52's. Over subsequent successive years, going on to work and tour with a diverse collection of artists ranging from Madness, The Eurythmics and Steve Marriott to Chris Jagger and The Alabama 3... More recently recording two critically acclaimed albums for Rough Trade with ‘Eileen Rose’, and working with assorted alt. country noir, such as ‘Viarosa’ and The Willard Grant Conspiracy’s ‘Simon J. Alpin’.
Currently working on new material blending 60's British Invasion, Americana and Punk, Barry Payne is about to return to his garage rock, big beat and blues roots.
