Studio progress
Hey people!
After a little break we're finally back in the studio, recording that album we started on a couple of month ago. I've done some work in between, putting on synthesizers, the Hammond and stuff. I've also been working on the sound for this album, you know, we gotta decide whether we wanna sound vintage or modern, whether we wanna sound a little loose or hard as solid rock, arena or club/rehearsal room, medium distortion or heavy distortion. The best solution for us, it seems, is to put us in the middle of all this. And that's what makes it so exciting. Sometimes it sounds like if all hell broke lose - the whole thing is so friggin loud that it almost hurts, and it feels like you're standing in front of the biggest arena in the known universe. Then at the end of the very same song you hear me say: "Alrite! It's a wrap". Some parts are hard, some parts are soft. And though we play and record with vintage instruments and equipment, we mix it in a modern way. Actually, the sound on The Answer's latest record "Rise" was a great inspiration for that decision. They play pretty authentic 70s rock, but that doesn't mean they have to make records like they did in 1970. So many rock bands tries so hard to make their records sound like they're from that past, but for what reason? Back then they used the best equipment avalible to make the records sound as good as possible with the stuff they had. If they had today's technology they would have made records like we make today's records.
Anyway, many of you will probably wonder how the next album is gonna be like (not all the techno-mumbo-jumbo above). Some of you have heard our new stuff live, so that might give you a clue - for the rest of you I think the most obvious thing you'll notice is the presence of Tracy and his brilliant guitar playing. As the result of being a four-piece with only guitars, bass, vocals and drums, the music will be more guitar-oriented. Also, there will be more room for each instrument. The drums are louder, the guitar is right in your face (our engineer records the same guitar track through three different stacks), the bass is punchier and there's even more of Chris (we give the vocals our full attention, try out different mic's, rooms etc.). In addition to this we experiment with a range of different instruments like the blues harp, a dobro, mandolins, a banjo, maybe a hapsichord and lots of other stuff. This is what makes studio fun.
Some of you might think that Love Cries is a good pointer to how the next album will be, but it really isn't. And, of course, Love Cries will not appear on the album. It's recorded for a Stage Dolls tribute album exclusively. The songs on the album are much more based on guitar riffs, it's heavier, tighter and more aggressive. And the sound is better than ever, of course!
As a band we're more of a team now than earlier. When I joined the band four years ago Chris would come with a song based on a synth line which he showed to the keyboard player, and the rest of us pretty much formed around that (you hear that pretty clear on our debut album). Obviously it doesn't work that way now, since there ain't no keyboard player anymore. Whenever Chris comes with a new song and plays it on his keyboard, it's getting translated by Tracy, Tommi and me into an expression we're all comfortable with; it has to in order for us to play it. Me and Tracy also contribute more as song writers now. Some songs I've written entierly on my own, including the lyrics, some songs are based on me and Tracy's riffs and instrumental arrangements with Chris' lyrics and melody lines, and some songs are Chris' work entierly. In one case I wrote the lyrics for the chorus and Chris wrote the rest. That shows how great we work together!
We're a little closer to our rock n' roll roots on this album, you know, the music we grew up with as kids like The Cult, Guns n' Roses, Mötley Crüe, Poison, Aerosmith and The Rolling Stones. But we are still Malice In Wonderland as you know us (hopefully ) and I can't imagine any reason for not liking this album if you liked our debut. It's simply great, classic rock n' roll done MiW-style, including our take on the Stones' "Gimme Shelter" which in my opinion is one of our best.
