Music Man was founded in 1966. Its first store was in a street called 'Henegouwenstraat'. Initially it was a used record shop selling 7-inch singles. These were purchased from jukebox leasing companies. Since these companies were themselves responsible for the weekly input of new singles, they had huge stocks of old material.
In 1967 Music Man decided to move to new premises in the 'Jan Breydelstraat'. From that moment on, brand new singles were offered for sale as well. The decision to open another branch store, more in particular in the 'Bagattenstraat', dates back from 1972. That is the place where we first started the retail of long-playing albums. As a genre, rock music was growing ever more important, which is why in the end it became our specialty.
A third branch was opened in 1975 in the 'Langestraat' in Ledeberg. That store closed down in 1982. Ever since the end of the seventies we are supplied with import records every week. In addition to the 7-inches the 12-inch single gradually came into vogue. One of the first smashing hits in that respect was Lalo Schifrin 's 'Jaws'.
One of our distinguishing trade marks was our huge stock of approximately 200,000 titles, which accounts for the fact that older issues (much sought after by dee-jays) remained available for a considerable period of time. (The 7-inch stock was for instance preserved on to 1992). Music Man has always, to this very day, kept the classics on the shelves, of course within the boundaries of what can be stored.
In 1982 the activities of Music Man were expanded. A couple of remarkable releases, such as Mike Anthony's 'Why can't we live together ?' (800,000 copies sold) stroke the eye in that period. In 1985, at the occasion of Nacht Und Nebel's huge hit record 'Beats of Love', Music Man decided to establish its own record label M.M.I., short for 'Music Man International Records'.
The offspring of the New Beat era characterizes just as well the dawn of a busy and creative Belgian scene. The international success records of the period marked the outset of an export trade. Kate B's 'Breakdown', released on the M.M.I. label in 1988, was a New Beat classic. 'Acid Rock' by Rhythm Device ranks among the later New Beat hits and in a certain way also announced the end of an era.
A landmark for the early nineties were the B-sides (Frank de Wulf), which in the end would revel in the release of no less than five volumes. This was the period when 'News' was founded, a common denominator for several labels and compilations. The most renowned of them are: Serious Beats, nowadays also Club System, Dance Train, Vibrationz, I love Techno, Fuse, Kozzmozz and Eskimo. For the sake of further expansion it was necessary to split up the record store and 'News' in 1993. News became a full-grown record company, focusing on distribution, import & export and production.
In the meantime (i.e. in 1992) the Music Man label was restyled. Its first release was 'Hit Hard' by Robert Armani, a smashing techno hit ! Music Man developed into a renowned techno label with international stature, featuring acts such as Steve Stoll, Justin Berkovi, Secret Cinema and Green Velvet.
The store was redecorated in 1998, though the display of the records was rearranged four years earlier : the vinyl department was divided into two sections with two seperate areas, a Red Room for trance & dance, and a Blue Room for house & techno.
In current times we are the largest and most acclaimed retail store for dance in Belgium. We offer a wide and most varied spectrum of the genre.
