Human connection. Good music. Sincerity. Things that make me laugh. How everything works. Building things. Communication. Being stubborn. Baking. Philosophy.
On rotation this month: Pimsleur Speak and Read Spanish 1, Joni Mitchell, Brian Wilson, Fleetwood Mac, Andrew Bird, Mirah, Matthew Sweet, Elliott Smith, Radiohead, The Flaming Lips, sweet, romantic Tchaikovsky, and lots of songs about standing up straight...doing what must be done. Also, anything that facilitates a crazy dance party in my apartment.
Also, this:
Documentaries dominate lately: Blue Planet, Life in the Undergrowth, and The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive... thanks BBC!
Movies I will watch again and again: Lawrence of Arabia, the early Muppet saga, Office Space, Dancer in the Dark, Alien/Aliens, the original Star Wars Trilogy, nearly everything Akira Kurosawa and Sergio Leone have done, cheesy and/or well-made Sci-fi and Horror, Spinal Tap, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Lost In Translation, Blue (White and Red, too), good animation (a lot of anime, including most that Miyazaki has done, and some classic Disney), The Little Mermaid, Stripes, Waiting for Guffman, Rushmore, epic tales of passion and heroism and stuff that makes me laugh.
The Office (BBC), The Simpsons, Frontline, Sex and the City, The Wire ("What the fuck did I do?"), all forensic shows, pretty much anything on the History, Science, Discovery channels or PBS. Adult Swim on Cartoon Network. Pacers games. Marty Stouffer's Wild America. HGTV.
The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupéry, all by John and Dan Fante, Henry Miller, Knut Hamsun, Charles Bukowski, John Irving, Steven King (particularly the Gunslinger Series), The Princess Bride, books that give me skills: nunchuck skills, bowhunting skills, computer hacking skills... basically good fiction and good textbooks.
