Mighty Atom Records was formed in early 2000 with the aim of growing a successful independent record label operating out of South Wales. We certainly went into this venture with naive and romantic dreams of establishing a successful independent label. Six years on and all the naivety has long gone, however the dream remains.
The first band we signed to the label were Swansea's Powder, Kerrang's Best Unsigned Band of 1999. The band went straight into the studio to record an EP, "The Art Of Self Offense" released in May 2000. The single was well received in the mainstream rock press, and with an appearance on Session in Wales.
In March 2001 we signed Liberty 37 who had released their first album, "The Greatest Gift" on Beggars Banquet in 1999. With the opening of the new Mighty Atom Studios in January 2001, the band had come in to do some pre-production work for the second album. These tracks formed the basis of "God Machine" which we released in October 2001. The album went on to make the top ten albums of the year in Rocksound, as well as Album of the Month and a 4K review in Kerrang!
Around this time, Goatboy, who we had signed shortly after Powder, were also starting to make an impact with their debut album, "Superlube". It was getting great reviews in the music press and this coupled with a John Peel session led to some major gigs including Glastonbury in 2002.
In April 2002 we signed Funeral For a Friend . Their first EP "Between Order and Model" was recorded at Mighty Atom Studios and was released in August generating a massive buzz throughout the music industry. The EP sold like wildfire. The buzz created by the band led to them being picked up by Infectious Records / Warner by mid 2003.
At the start of 2003, the label signed Hondo Maclean . Their debut EP, Plans For A Better Day was released in June that year with artwork featuring Hollywood actress Asia Argento (of xXx fame). The band had sent her producer a promo copy of the EP as one of the tracks was titled "Asia Argento". She loved it and was more than happy to appear on the cover. With support tours including Steve-O (Jackass), Poison The Well, Matchbook Romance, Anthrax, AlexIsOnFire, My Chemical Romance, Lost Prophets and Johnny Truant as well as sessions on the Radio 1 Rock show 2003 was a great year for the band.
In mid 2003 we were approached by 3 Colours Red who were looking for an indie label to put out their first single since reforming in late 2002. We had always been massive fans of the band back in the mid/late 90's so Repeat To Fade was released in May co-inciding with a full UK headline tour and appearances at Reading and Leeds festivals. The band subsequently signed to the label to record and release the full lengther "The Union Of Souls" in July 2004.
And so the years have rolled on but no way have we faltered. One car and one crazy A&R lady [who goes by the name of Chessie] took to the roads last year in hot persuit of a new love, a new obsession a new MUST HAVE accessory for ANY passionate music lover... Brigade . After seeeing them for the first time at the Square in Harlow, and after a brief meeting in a Weatherspoons, Chessie rang Dave demanding the immediate signing of possibly the best band in the world... [and then proceeded to go to every other gig on the tour... bar scotland. its too cold for her up there.] With frontman Will's brother of Fightstar/Busted fame, there's certainly been much interest. But i tell you something... THESE BOYS CAN HOLD THEIR OWN AND FIGHT THEIR OWN. Brigade WILL blow you away.
So here we are... 2006. Look out world, we're guna fuck you up ROYALY.
