Tom Urwin aka Firefox has been DJing for almost four years now and producing for over three.
Tom gained his first real taste of hard dance music at mountain raves in the back and beyond of Cork in Ireland, where he grew up. Most of the parties were based around acid genres, such as acid techno and acid trance, although there was a lot of variation with everything from hard house to hardcore. Tom's favourite labels at the time included Stay Up Forever, Routemaster, Acid Test & VCF. Alot of the underground sound can be found in most of the tracks he has produced.
About a year or two after Tom started going to underground parties, he got his first real taste of the harder side of hard house and hard NRG, taking a liking to artists such as Grady G, Narc & Kampain. It didn't take long before he became accustomed to the dark sound and change over from the acid style that he was used to.
Now five years on, Tom has had several digital and vinyl signings including the likes of Nosebleed Records, Toolbox Music, Oktane Records and Spin Hard to name but a few. He is now broadening his horizons too, producing more varied styles than the hoover filled NRG he was used to, including some more techy and groovy numbers. Tom's favourite artists now include Defective Audio, James Nardi & Riggsy to name but a few.
Tom has played several gigs in the last year including Hostile, Tweak, Hardcore4Essex, Confusion and Sectioned, with more gigs upcoming this year.
Reviews:
Firefox & Rico - "Chemically Fueled":
The original version of Chemically Fueled is not for the faint hearted - those who know of Tom Firefox will have an idea what to expect! A clean kick and rasping percussion lead up to what can only be described as a pummelling bassline which gives the track a huge amount of energy. Filtered hoover patterns and stabs and plenty of cheeky edits complete the build up to the well constructed breakdown, where an eerie string section masks the coming riff of pure filth. I’m a big fan of tracks which don’t drop where you think they’re going to and this one will no doubt cause a few red faces on the dancefloor. When it does drop the bassline again gives the track a lot of energy with the various stabs helping carry it home. (Written by Dave Curtis)
Evo D & Rigid - "Shakey Ground" (Firefox Remix):
Firefox gets busy with the hoovers and offbeat basslines for this super-charged assault on 'Shakey Ground', the brand new single from Nuwave stars Evo D & Rigid. If you like your house hard and filled with energy, make sure you check this immediately! (Written by Ollie Perris)
Firefox - "Lock 'n Load"
"Firefox’s ‘Lock n Load’ completes the package. The UK’s answer to Grady G & Narc, Tom’s offering is a hard, fast NRG workout with huge offbeat bass, crazy percussion, distorted synths and acid, and a nagging hoover riff to finish the track off." (Written by Dave Curtis)
Firefox - "A Greater Darkness"
Firefox delivers an aural assault for the first release on Genuine Error Records, which comes backed with two NRG-fuelled remixes from A.M.G & Robbie Muir. The Original Mix is the one we've highlighted however, comprising a huge offbeat bass and menacing hoover riff. (Written by Ollie Perris)
