Welcome to Poet’s Official MySpace Page!
For the past 8 years, Poet (real name: Daniel Clarke) has been doing what he loves best; listening, writing, producing and studying music.
He never knew what he wanted to achieve from life until his final year at Cannon Palmer school. This started after studying a John Agard poem called “half-caste†in an English lesson. Being biracial (half black, half white), Poet related to this and started to explore the art of poetry further. He found a poem written by Tupac Amaru Shakur who he knew was also a rapper. After listening to Tupac’s music he began studying his work and then moved on to other rappers as he considered these artists his teachers. He began writing lyrics in 2000 and slowly developed himself. None of his friends had an interest in a career involving music so it was down to his sheer determination that he continued for so many years with only his own motivation to keep him going. Due to not having any contacts within the industry, Poet knew he was going to have to do everything himself;
In 2001 Poet started working for 6 months at Golden Banana Records in Woolwich, where he learnt basic engineering and production skills. This experience also provided him with knowledge of Logic Platinum and how a recording studio is managed and maintained.
Soon after leaving, he started a 16 week music production course in Bethnal Green where he learnt the fundamentals of creating music with Cubase. He then took these skills away with him and found a full-time job to pay for a basic home studio setup to continue his ambitions.
As the years went by Poet continued to develop both his style and level of confidence by teaching himself as much about the business as possible. Whilst continuing to song write, rap and produce, He then moved on to purchase various books on artist management and then researched the subject on the internet.
In 2006 Poet came up with an idea involving a classically trained composer and a brand called Classical Grime. He put everything together and started the production team who mixed original classical orchestrations with a UK Hip-Hop / Grime attitude, style and arrangement. Poet was co-director, co-producer, and song writer/rapper. Poet researched the industry as much as possible in an attempt to take his ideas forward. He then directed and managed all aspects of the business until after a year when the partnership began to break down in late 2007. Further disagreements and failure to negotiate contract terms led to an end to the collaboration when Poet decided to go his own way.
2008 saw Poet put his production skills to one side and decided to focus on his ability to write and rap. Days after deciding this Poet then met Philippe De Beauregard, a French producer working at Jamestown Studios in Whitechapel. After discussing plans and ambitions it became evident that the 2 were on the same wavelength and decided to collaborate on an album.
After completing songs “Hit Listâ€, “This is how you tell†and “Case Closedâ€, Poet decided that it was now time to get the right team together in to take his music forward. He recently began seeking management.
More to come soon...
