Ellington, Connecticut and its Supermarket were places unlike any other. A small farming community with more cows than people, Ellington was a place where everybody knew everyone else, things moved at their own pace (and everything slowed down for tractors), and the local kids went crazy trying to find ways to pass the time. In many ways the Ellington Supermarket was all of those things to an even greater degree, a small, scrappy, one-of-a-kind place that always seemed to be on the verge of disaster and a great place to work and spend one's days.
Now all of this is changing rapidly as the forces of progress move through Ellington and the developers continue paving the town over. And the young employees of the Supermarket, once content to gleefully screw around amongst the giant playground that is their store, are now faced with the prospect of losing the place in this world they care about the most. But what can a collection of 20-year-olds do against one of the largest Big Box corporations in the world?
A modern day Frank Capra tale about growing into adulthood in small town USA, "The Supermarket" is a story of laughter, love, old rivalries, coming home for the summer, barely functional cars, small triumphs and tragic loss, late-night lawbreaking, fearing the future, food fights, standing together, and finding your place in the world.
A contemporary incarnation of classics like "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington" and "It's A Wonderful Life," paired with the modern day filmmaking techniques of Martin Scorsese and the speedy humor of The Simpsons and Monty Python thrown in, we hope to create a film that will find an audience among the young and old, making people laugh, think, and remember what they loved about their own hometowns and first jobs.
