U.S. Attorney Rachel Alice Hunter..
Organized Crime and Racketeering Division
U.S. Attorney Rachel Alice Hunter.. (b. June 1st, 1981) is responsible for several high profile mafia cases involving La Cosa Nostra and the Russian Mafia. Her biggest investigation was the six-month surveillance of Russian Mafia Leader Mikhail Villanovich leading to his arrest and the subsequent trial that will be the first few chapters of the novel.
Miss Hunter also had achieved a successful run against her father's criminal defense firm; she ended Mafia Crime Boss Vincent K. Giamatti's murderous reign with six murder convictions all against marquee defense attorney Ronald Chadwick in 2017. Watters later appealed the case and Miss Hunter crushed the appeal. Giamatti's sentence to life without parole was upheld when the U.S. Supreme Court refused to review the case. She later also convicted William Kinnen of murdering his wife in 2015 against her father's law partner Christian Watters. The understated Watters affectionately called her the "sledgehammer" for asking and getting a life sentence without the possibility of parole for the emotional slaying of Kinnen's dying wife.
Nonetheless, she ascended quickly against organized crime including the Russian mafia which prompted her office to be move to New York FBI Headquarters for security reasons after a tip that Russian assassins had been employed to kill her and her staff. Unshaken, she commenced an elaborate surveillance against Mikhail Villanovich in 2021 resulting in seventeen murder charges with six convictions. She remarked to the defendant in holding, "I made sure you won't ever see the light of day in prison, and will do the hardest time possible. The good guys will always win as long as I'm around. Your associates are next. Enjoy your solitude." Villanovich was later found hung in his cell in an apparent suicide. When told of his death, she quipped, quite carelessly, "Works for me."
Chadwick, Harrington, & Watters, L.L.P.
Rachel Alice Hunter's father, Warren Lloyd Harrington, III, is a partner in one of the most prestigious criminal defense firms in New York City. Ronald Chadwick, her father, and Christian Watters formed the small firm in 1973 that subsequently grew to sixty-five lawyers serving the entire eastern seaboard. The firm's revenue exceeded $175 million in fiscal year 2010. For the trial of mafia crime boss Vincent K. Giamatti, Harrington received a $5 million retainer and and flat fee of $15 million in 2008. Giamatti was acquitted of murder and racketeering after a six-month trial in federal court. His second trial, attended by Asst. U.S. Attorney Rachel Alice Hunter against the notorious Ronald Chadwick in 2010, ended Giamatti's reign as the Don with six murder convictions. Watters later appealed the case and she personally crushed the appeal before six appellate courts. Giamatti's sentence to six life terms without the possibility of parole was further upheld when the U.S. Supreme Court refused to review the case. She later also convicted William Kinnen in the mercy killing of his wife Heather in 2009 against Watters. Kinnen was under FBI surveillance in connection with several drug lords in Columbia. Watters affectionately called her the "sledgehammer" for asking and getting a life sentence without the possibility of parole in the death of his dying wife. Of course, she later also prosecuted Kinnen on several drug-related charges furthering cementing his sentence. Surprisingly, the crusading U.S. Attorney doesn't support the death penalty.
