Born and raised in New York City, Frank Katz started playing drums
at the age of six. Inspiration for music came from his father, the
legendary jazz pianist Dick Katz , who played with Elvin Jones, Jack
Dejohnette, Roy Haynes, Philly Joe Jones, Sonny Rollins, and many
others. At age ten, Frank studied with Connie Kay (the Modern Jazz
Quartet ), and in his teens with Kim Plainfield, Kenwood Dennard and
others at Drummers Collective. Frank recorded his first album at age
seventeen with cellist Arthur Russel, and Peter Zummo of The Lounge
Lizards. At age nineteen Frank joined the faculty of Drummers
Collective. He went on to perform and record with James Blood Ulmer,
Adam Rogers, Dave Douglas, Chris Wood, Ray Anderson, Dave Fiuzynsky,
Harvie Swartz, Mark Soskin, Dave BInney, Ben Monder, Reggie Washington,
Onaje Allan Gumbs, The Jazz Hole , Donny Mcaslin, Mark Feldman, Tim
Reis (the Rolling Stones), Jill Sobule , Brand X, Percy Jones, Dave
Mann, and many others.
In 1992,Frank joined the legendary fusion group Brand X, whose
previous drummers included Phil Collins, Kenwood Dennard, and Mike
Clark. With the group, Frank recorded the highly acclaimed album
Xcommunication. His playing on this album received rave reviews in
publications world wide, including Modern Drummer. Frank also toured
extensively with Brand X and recorded the subsequent albums Manifest
Destiny, Produced by David Henschel (Genesis, Elton John),and Timeline
with the group, as well as many other Cds with
different artists.
Presently, Frank continues to tour, perform, and record as well as
teach at Drummers Collective New York where drummers from all over
the world have studied with him. Students have included Anton Fig
(David Letterman show), Sterling Campbell
(David Bowie ,Duran Duran), Anthony Johnson (247 spyz), Keith Carlock
( Sting, Steely Dan), Chris Reddan ( Popa Chubby), Guy Licata
(Bill Laswell), Dan Prestup (winner of the worlds fastest feet
contest), Alex Cohen, Tobias Ralph (Duncan Sheik,Nena), Swiss Chris
(John legend,Snoop Dog) and Chris Coleman (Israel and the New Breed,
Kreflo Dollar).
Frank recently released the book "Contemporary Drumset Phrasing " on
Hal Leonard publications. It just received a five star
review in the current (November 2006) issue of Modern Drummer, where
Frank is also interviewed in a full length feature article.
