Neil Pearlman

A Scottish Sundae with Jazz Sauce

About Me

Welcome to the Myspace page of Neil Pearlman. I have been playing Piano for 14 years. I grew up accompanying the Scottish fiddle music of my father Ed Pearlman, and have studied Jazz piano both independently and with Thomas Snow and Benjamin Waltzer. In the world of traditional music, I have performed with Frank Ferrell, Ed Pearlman, Greg Boardman and others as well as performing as a Cape Breton-style step dancer on numerous occasions with Natalie MacMaster. I have been a member of the band Highland Soles for 5 years and performed with them throughout the East Coast. In the Jazz world, I have performed throughout the Portland, ME area with various small groups of my own and as a sideman. Some notable co-performers have been: Don Doane, Willy Johnson, Sam Sherry, and Jeff Witherell. I have also played the mandolin for 7 years, studying with John McGann as well as on my own, and I was the faculty mandolin teacher for the Buckdancer's Choice Music Store for 1 year. Currently I am studying Jazz Piano with Benjamin Waltzer in New York City and performing intermittently around the city. I am also performing around New England with Ed Pearlman and we are working on a duo CD which should be finished in a few months (see edpearlman.net for details). I will hopefully have new music up soon, but until then, check out the samples on Ed Pearlman's myspace.

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: highlandsoles.com
Band Members: I have performed with: Don Doane, Ed Pearlman, Willie Johnson, Frank Ferrell, Natalie MacMaster, Greg Boardman, Jeff Witherell, and many others.
Influences: Literally every style of music. Particularly scottish and all styles of jazz. I listen to everything from Duke Ellington, Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock, Weather Report, the Yellow Jackets, Pete McCann, and Ben Waltzer, to Aly Bain, the Unusual Suspects, Alaisdair Fraiser, Natalie MacMaster, and Blazin' Fiddles, to Dream Theater, Led Zeppelin, and AC/DC, to Tower of Power, Medeski Martin and Wood, Jeff Lorber, and Grover Washington Jr, to SoCalled, the Kharkov Klezmer Band, and the Klezmatics, to anything else ever.
Sounds Like: I play in many bands that are all different styles and are experimenting within those styles. I mix in everything I like, which is pretty much everything. So I'm in a Scottish band that mixes in pop and jazz chord progressions and rhythms to the tradition. I'm in a modern jazz quintet that is experimenting with free, avant gard, bebop, cool, and other modern jazz styles. I'm working on a Klezmer metal band, and a funk trio, and will soon be rehearsing with a new scottish band under my own direction that will be mixing even more styles into the scottish mix. Stay tuned for updates regarding my new projects.
