Far Beyond Driven

About Me

I'm a nerdy, curmudgeon-y dork in general... Those terms, hopefully, are used accurately because I really hate how popular it is right now to be one, even if you're not. "Dorks" aren't popular. Trying to make them popular is kind of (oxy)moronic. The G4 channel isn't nerdy enough for me.Wow, a semi-rant in the second sentence of the "About Me" box. That didn't take very long, did it? Yeah, I kinda define myself by my opinions about external things. There's probably some kind of dislikes section, but I'll just get ahead of myself and put one here, since it's very relevant. I hate filling stuff out about myself for the purpose of appearing agreeable to the people who read it. It's very stressful, and I always wonder whether I should just give up and stop caring. Oh, which reminds me of another dislike. Almost anybody who says "I don't care what people think of me" is a big fat liar asshead. 95% of people care to some extent how they're viewed in other people's eyes. Uh, I guess I'll start on the next form.Alright, fuck what's supposed to go in here, I'm putting in all my dislikes.People who are quick to refer to themselves as having any sort of Psychosis, AD(H)D, OCD, DID, Bipolarity, as well as any number of other mental disorders without actually having functional knowledge of them. If their best understanding of Schizophrenia is "sum1 whose like rilly crazy and weird lol," chances are it annoys me a lot. Confusing Schizophrenia with Dissociative Identity Disorder is also an annoyance.Related to all that is what I said previously concerning the widespread self-labeling of "dork/nerd/geek." If someone proudly (but with a faux pretext of it being something uncool) admits to being "such a nerd" simply because they enjoy playing Simpson's Hit-n-Run on X-Box now and then, chances are they are not a nerd. Playing console games doesn't make you a nerd. Major interest, as well as caring more about knowledge and/or some esoteric technology or subject (e.g. computers in general, Linux, D&D, Math, Science, ect.) than social pursuits makes you a nerd. It's funny how those terms were erstwhile used to describe social outcasts, yet today people use them in order to fit in or to almost be apologetic about playing fucking Gamecube sometimes. It seems much harder for non-nerds to simply say, "I like video games as an unserious hobby/pasttime," without adding some variation of "I know, I'm such a geek," with an implied "so what." It's as if to say, "I like video games because I'm part of a larger whole that shares the same interests," rather than, "I like video games because they're a relatively new and creative form of multimedia entertainment."If it wasn't for some semblance of self-restraint or other people saying, "holy shit stfu," when I get going about things that bug me, I could literally go on for hours free associating. I suppose it's not all things that bug me, but that's what I'm best at noticing I suppose. This may be an unlikeable trait to some people, but I would imagine it's quite understandable to those similar to me. With that in mind, I'll keep writing because I'm bored and it's relaxing. So yes, getting broader in scope from the "not everyone who calls them self a nerd is one" topic, I profoundly dislike the tendency shown by society in general to dumb themselves down in order to be more sociable. Now and then I receive some backlash from the unfortunate souls who have to hear or read my diatribe about this or that, and at the core of most of the complaints is I should stop using "big words" and "trying to look smart." Now think about that for a second. What is generally looked down upon today, and has been for a while? Using big words. Being (or 'trying to look') smart. I suppose it's pretty understandable that nobody likes to be made to feel inferior, but is it really such a terrible thing to hear about some subject of which you're ignorant in order to learn a thing or two? Or perhaps using the magic of the cybernets to take two seconds to look up a word at one of the 235,830,285,320 online dictionaries?I guess it is. I mean, I'm not even that good of a writer. I really despise bad spelling and grammar (another related tangent of potential rant-material), but I make enough mistakes myself. But even my passable writing sometimes makes a few people uncomfortable. I suppose this is the reason -or a good part of it- that so many people shy away from 'appearing smart.' To the general public, it's more comfortable and successful to appeal to the lowest common denominator rather than use a few 'big words' at the risk of alienating someone. I really do wish people wouldn't be so afraid to heighten the level of their conversations just slightly, even if it makes someone uncomfortable. This is the reason I'm incredibly self-conscious about how I phrase things, so that I don't use unnecessary rhetoric or vocabulary simply based on the number of letters it contains, but also so I don't dull the point of what I'm saying simply because there are some people too lazy to use a dictionary. Holy shit, even I use a dictionary. I've used www.thefreedictionary.com maybe 7 times during the writing of this nonsense. It's a very minuscule effort to spend a couple seconds knowing the definition of a word before using it, rather than remaining ignorant. So yeah, anyway, it's stressful to have to bend and strain my words and phrasing to compensate for the lack of some simple vocabulary some people can have, and to be fair, at least an equal amount of that speech-changing should be shared by people who are willingly ignorant in order to better bridge the communicating gap. It's really depressing knowing that dumbing down a message is the most likely way to increase sales (this is where T.V. programs and advertising comes in).Well, since I'm sure I've already come across as a pompous ass quite well (see, that self-description is a perfect example of what I just wrote about. safer to insult myself to begin with than to have someone else do it, right? I am the sux), I'll end whatever the fuck this rant-journal thing is. Maybe I should start a blog. Nah, blogs are another thing that annoy me.One of my recurring interests that I don't always mention is becoming temporarily enamored with some grand and/or mysterious subject (usually outer space; recently String Theory) and going down a rabbit hole of seemingly neverending tangents of information. This is usually accomplished via Stephen Hawking Books.-If you caught that then you are smarter than most, and I'm proud of you-I hate the commercialization of Napoleon Dynamite and old Nickelodeon shows. (HOT TOPIC, I'M LOOKING AT YOU!)
