Meeting other people whose fathers are tautological sadists.
80% of the population are either assholes or morons. I'm just trying to figure out who's in the remaining 20% And yes, I know twenty percent is generous, but what can I say; I'm an optimist!
Mainly I'm interested in lyrics. I can't listen to a band with weak or stupid lyrics. Nor can I stand a stupid band name. String Cheese Incident maybe the greatest band ever to exist but I'll never know. As for what I like; repetitious, yet creative, music and clever lyrics. Essentially the two ideal bands for me are the Fall and Public Enemy. Aside from that my listen taste has an punk/hardcore bent. The Damned(whom I particularly love), Devo(a life altering experience), Generation X, (regular) X, Ramones and their ilk, Black Flag, Bad Brains(HR is the Greatest Singer EVER!), DK, etc. I like original punkers like MC5, The Stooges, Captain Beefheart, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, The Monks, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cockran, Bo Didley, Radio Birdman, 13th Floor Elevators(though I prefer Roky Erickson solo), and Them. As vogue as it is now I have always loved "Post-Punk"; Pop Group, Gang of Four, Throbbing Gristle, Virgin Prunes, James Chance, Killing Joke, This Heat, Saccharine Trust, Big Black, Public Image Ltd., Lydia Lunch, Foetus, The The, The Birthday Party. I like Golden Age rap like the aforementioned Public Enemy, De La Soul, Rakim, BDP, Ultramagnetic, and so forth. I'm a bit of an anglophile as well; re: Morrisey, Happy Mondays, The Streets, Dizzy Rascal, Massive Attack, Oasis(gasp). I would list more stuff but I find huge band lists annoying, though I really like when people search music and write me about their tastes. So, please do. I can talk about music endlessly(and have much to the chagrin of my friends). I'll shut up now.
Particular favorites include: Ducksoup by the Marx Brothers. Holy Mountain by Alejandro Jodorowsky. Seven Samurai/Yojimbo by Kurosawa(Toshiro Mifune is God). Aguirre, Wrath of God by Werner Herzog(Klaus Kinski is also Godlike). Richard Kern/Nick Zedd movies. Defending Your Life by Albert Brooks. Repo Man by Alex Cox("Girls pay to go out with me!"). Blue Velvet by David Lynch. I'm really not a snob about it, I'll give anything a try. Me and my dear friend who lived out of state once both rented Legally Blonde and watched it simultaneously while on the phone with each other just so we could make fun of it. I also have a really annoying habit of knowing a lot of actors names, it makes me look like a massive dork.
First and foremost: The Wire is the best show ever made. I've watched so much Law and Order(all variants) that I'm comfortable saying Lenny Briscoe is my soulmate, too bad it sucks now. Mostly I go for humor/satire. Daily Show, The Office(US and UK), Simpsons(btw, I think the Family Guy is super-lame), Futurama, Freaks and Geeks/Undeclared and so on. I also like to turn HBO dramas into drinking games. Six Feet Under: drink everytime someone gets "actor-y". Deadwood: drink everytime someone says, "cunt or cocksucker". Sopranos: drink everytime someone says something stupid (i.e. pronounces something incorrectly trying to sound smart, etc.). Rome: drink every time someone dies or lies. Needless to say, I have a bit of a drinking problem.
I really like Feral House books like Apocalypse Culture, Cult Rapture, Pop Narcotic, Lords of Chaos, American Hardcore Tribal History, Lexicon Devil. I'm a pretty religious reader of The Onion. Other favorites include Trainspotting/Porno by Irvin Welsh. Black Spring by Henry Miller. Ritual in the Dark by Colin Wilson. Planet Joe by Joe Cole. Illuminatus Trilogy by R.A. Wilson. The Stranger by Albert Camus. Nip the Buds, Shoot the Kids by Kenzuburo Oe. Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldrich by Phillip K. Dick. "In the Moutains of Madness" by H.P. Lovecraft. Lifetaker by Bill shields. Bangkok 8 by John Burdette. I also like cheesy true crime and occult books and political humor by Al Franken and Michael Moore(every other political I've ever read has been too pedantic). I'm not a huge comic fan anymore, but I still Read Eightball, Love and Rockets, and Hate(or whatever Peter Bagge puts out).
Groucho Marx, George Best, Zinedane Zidane, Bruce Lee, Mark Twain, Vitali Klitchko, Amelia Airheart, The Viet Cong, Dracula
