A:
Unfortunately this doesn't do much but rather affirm or confirm that there is activity going on. Ideally, an investigator would ask a question, wait a few minutes then check to see if there was a response. From there you can ask more detailed questions. It does seem a little odd if the investigator is asking something like you mentioned, "How did you die?" only because the spirit might not be aware of that fact. The phrasing of the questions is very important. If you believe the ghost was from a german fellow who only spoke german, then the ideal way to ask questions would be in german. Too often folks are eager to get the tape full and the video done that they wait to review evidence after the fact. This is convenient but your group may be missing out. If the recording is of a residual haunt this wouldn't matter so much.
We do both, depends on the investigation but more importantly the situation. For instance, at one of our investigations I was followed by a child spirit that was saying my name, each time more urgently. We didn't review the evidence til after the investigation. I had this overwhelming urge to rush back to the site but that wasn't feasible. If we had checked at the time of recording I could've responded appropriately and possibly have gotten more evidence. This is where a sceance or greater communication would've been appropriate. Both E.V.P. methods work great, just use your best judgement.
