Born and raised in Chicago, for the past three years she has been sharing her thoughts thru the form of spoken word poetry to many audiences. M'Reld has won several Poetry Slams including National Black Pride 2005, Runaway Wordsmith 2004 and Rainbow Push Coalition 2004. M'Reld was featured on the 5th season of HBO Def Poetry Jam where she performed "Ready For Love". This young lady has poetry that speaks on a variety of issues including poverty, social injustice and real life experiences. Her poem H.I.V., was an epic tale of how the AIDS epidemic is affecting African Americans. M'Reld has shared the stage with many acts from 2005 American Idol Winner Fantasia to The Last Poets. In early 2005, she founded Verbal Balance. A phenomenal emsemble of poets that have also made there mark in Chicago.M'Reld's future plans are to release her second album titled "It is what it Is" in early 2007. This album release party will also serve as her first one woman show sharing the same title. The one-woman-show will feature M'Reld not only as a poet, but as a vocalist and a MC. A true wordsmith, M'Reld performs with power and grace as she spits poetry from the bottom of her soul. It was an essay about the 1992 L.A. Riots that caught the attention of her teacher; the next year she watched as Maya Angelou recited “Still I Rise†at the inauguration of President Bill Clinton and a seed was planted. Nurturing that seed by keeping a journal close at all times, M’Reld participated in open mic events in college that led to the invitation of other similar venues. The response was warm; that was when she decided to slam.In 2004, M’Reld won several slams, including the Runaway Wordsmiths, Gwendolyn Brooks Writers Conference, Rainbow Push Conference, and Creative Minds Sister Slam. The same year she began hosting a weekly open mic series. A Chicago native, M’Reld rides every lyric like the El train, stopping periodically, taking you out of your comfort zone and enlightens you to the simplest, yet wondrous things.The first Sunday of November 2004 M’Reld was invited and chosen to perform a poem before her entire church congregation which included Illinois Senator Barak Obama to encourage voters to participate in the upcoming election. In 2005, M’Reld performed on the acclaimed television series HBO Presents Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry.M’Reld speaks the naked truth as she performs her poetry, speaking on a range of topics, which include social injustice, HIV/AIDS epidemic and everyday life issues. M’Reld has been the opening act for a host of celebrated acts including The Last Poets, American Idol Winner Fantasia, MC Lyte, Raheem DeVaughn, Little Brother, Trey Songs and Kindred the Family Soul. includes poets, writers, emcees, and performers – in 2005.
