Thursday night is Llama night...

About Me

Mel began playing the acoustic guitar at age 10, but made the switch to electric bass at 11. At 12, she also began learning the classical guitar.
After being self taught for 3 years, at age 14 she started getting bass lessons and she’s been learning ever since.
On classical guitar, Mel has been working hard ever since she started learning. She has completed her Grade 7 and 8 AMEB practical exams, and this year she attempted her Lmus exam. Mel has also received honourable mentions for her performances at the Catholic Schools’ Performing Arts Festivals in 2002 and 2004.
While Mel loves the classical guitar, the electric bass is what she really loves. After she started playing bass, she became the main bassist at her school, Kolbe College. She played bass in the Concert Band, Jazz Band, Senior Guitar Ensemble and college musical productions in 2002, 2004 and 2005. Not only that, but Mel landed the job of bassist for a production of West Side Story in 2004. From 2006-2007, Mel was a member of the WAYJO Swing Band. Mel also received an honourable mention in 2006 at the Catholic Schools’ Performing Arts Festival for her performance of Donna Lee.
This year, Mel is in her second year at WAAPA, doing her Bachelor of Music – majoring in jazz performance, her principal instrument being electric bass... Aside from studying at WAAPA, she also teaches classical guitar and electric bass. Mel is also a member of Ted’s Empire, I Love Painting Houses, The Retrosonics, and the WAAPA Funk Band.
