Blogging is a tragic waste of human life

About Me

I have been a columnist for both Esquire and GQ, and I'm currently working on my third novel.

Here are the previous two.

As a sort of pre-prandial sherry, here's something to read atAmarillo Bay.

My Interests

I'm interested in nothing at all except my family and writing.

I'd like to meet:

Anyone who can read.

Music:

I work on the principle that it's not possible to take anyone's views on music seriously if they don't like the Beatles. Everything else is a question of personal taste and therefore debatable. But if you don't recognise the Beatles as the twentieth century's most inventive, most influential and most talented composers, you're pretty much admitting that you've rather missed the point of the last hundred years of musical endeavour. Should you fall into that category, I do not condemn neither do I mock. I merely despair and, having despaired, I move on.

Movies:

If I try hard I can probably come up with ten movies that I think are truly great. It's a thin layer of cream floating on the gruel of an extremely watery medium. I mean, most of it's swallowable, but not much of it's nourishing. You wouldn't want to have to live on it.

Television:

The percentage of TV that's watchable is so tiny as to be within the anticipated margin of error. From a statistical point of view, good TV doesn't exist. Why, then, do we spend so much time sitting there on the sofa waiting for it to appear?

Books:

Vonnegut, Roth, M.Amis, Robertson Davies, Wodehouse, Southern, Gogol... Will that do for now?
