The meaning of Yaiquab is ‘to show one self’ it derives from the story of Jacob and Esau when Jacob supplanted Esau’s birthright ‘trickery’ this name was given to him by his Israelite brothers. Don’t be fooled by the name, this man behind the name is multitalented in many aspects of the entertainment industry. From being a graphics designer, a Disc Jockey, to becoming a cultural reggae artist. When he migrated to the United States at the age of 20 he immediately got on his hustle to become a master of everything he purposed in his heart. He first went to school for graphics so he could make his own line of greeting cards, web sites and flyers. Yaiquab acquired his business sense, from his Uncle Marlon who introduced him to Net Marketing and schooled him on business ethics as a young black man in this supply and demand system; he quickly developed a love for business and management.
Yaiquab then linked up with Conquering Lion aka JP where he mastered the art of mixing on the turn tables , they played in places such as Higher and Higher, Calaloo and Warehouse. To purchase his first set he sold his X-Box, then he branched out on his own founding Yaiquab Sounds and now he is recording with well known producer Dainjamental to work on his debut single entitled ‘JAH Is There For You’ a reflection of his transformation from boy to man. When asked what was his inspiration for ‘Jah is there for you’, Yaiquab replied “I asked God for a way to show people all the great things He has done in my life, and bringing his word thru song was what He gave me, this is my testimony.â€
During this transition his younger brother Damian was his number one supporter for his singing career. Yaiquab really got into singing when he met Jahspa in 2005. Jahspa encouraged him to spread his love for God and music through singing. His vocal coach Joann is also a great asset to his singing career, she has assisted in the fine tuning of his baritone voice.
Kevin Archie aka Yaiquab is the eldest of 12 children. He was born 1977 in the Congo of Arima, Trinidad. He was raised in Chaguanas with his mother and 3 siblings. Yaiquab performed his first Soca song on stage as a child at his primary school , he sang ‘Right here in Trinidad and won 4th place. He attended Chaguanas Senior Comprehensive. Yaiquab’s family is no novice to the entertainment business, his mother performed for many years with Best Village a local African dance group which toured through out all the islands and his father marched with the police musical marching band. He was a very rebellious youth, a non-taker of advice, like most youngsters today, he thought he had the answers to all life’s questions. Life soon changed for him as a teenager, still not sure of how to make a contribution to the music he had come to love, his brother Damian formed their first high school hip hop group named ‘Booby Trap Crew’ aka BTC. His love for reggae music allowed him to view life through more mature eyes where fear was not permitted, he did it scared.
Stay tuned for Yaiquab’s second single ‘Babylon Respect Me’ to be released by Ezekiel Records 2007.
