Natural Born Killers, American History X, Kalifornia, True Romance, City Of God, Secretary, Dancer In The Dark, Requiem For A Dream, Amores Perros, Happiness, A Beautiful Mind, Donnie Darko, Vanilla Sky, The Silence Of The Lambs, Thirteen, Gia, Seven, Drugstore Cowboy, Carrie, Thelma And Louise, Girl, Interrupted, Boys Don't Cry, Stand By Me, Magnolia, Bringing Out The Dead, Pump Up The Volume, Heathers, Reality Bites, Airheads - favourite genres tend to be pretty much any cult/world cinema, 80's "coming-of-age"/slacker/stoner movie or anything dark, psychological and with a strong emphasis on what makes the character/s tick.
I struggle to get involved with books because I have a terribly short attention span and I find that generally, the act of reading doesn't engage enough of my senses to keep me interested for the extended periods of time required to endure and finish a novel. However, I did enjoy Elizabeth Wurtzels "Prozac Nation" for the simple fact that for what is essentially a few hundred leaves of paper bound together, upon reading, actually left me feeling a confliction of frustration, empathy, curiosity and apathy for the author. A result on her part, I feel! Her follow-up book "More, Now, Again" is even better - I highly recommend it to any serial procrastinators/addicts/obsessors who think they know everything there is to know about themselves. This book will prove you very wrong. I've been halfway through "Lucky: A Memoir" by Alice Sebold for about 18 months now and will eventually finish it some day. I recently concluded Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar and although I felt quite detatched from the narrator, (a purposeful intention, I'm sure...) I enjoyed the crudely vivid imagery aroused by her descriptions (although it grated at first...) One of my favourite books from recent times is Arthur Golden's Memoirs Of A Geisha. My poor attention span and terrible neurosis meant I got off to a slow start with it but once I got stuck in I was captivated and enchanted by the beautiful narrative. So delicate and graceful, yet incredibly potent. Much like a Geisha, I suppose. Chuck Palahniuk's Invisible Monsters (very addictive with an edgy, unique, fresh narrative and some cracking plot twists) was superb. Last book I read was a beautifully thoughtful, respectful and detailed Nick Drake biography which has really got me listening to his music again, as well as getting me into some of the other artists that are name-checked in the book. Current summer reading: Henry Rollins - Black Coffee Blues
Escape artists. And indeed all of the "ones that got away", even in light of advances in DNA technology!
