Hey Kittens! Thanks for stopping by! Let me tell you a bit about me: I'm the bestselling author of five Regency-set historical romances—and the sixth, My first book for Avon, The Perils of Pleasure , is out now -- gorgeous green cover flashing intermittently with my own mug up in the top left corne r! To date, my books have been nominated for numerous awards, including the Romance Writers of America Rita award, Romance Times Reviewer's Choice, the Holt Medallion, The Quills, and Bookseller's Best, and reviewers have been known to use words like "brilliant," "dazzling," "unforgettable," "witty" and "impossible to put down" when they're talking about them. :)
I'm particularly excited about POP, not only because reviews have been FANTASTIC -- it's a Romantic Times TOP PICK, it's a rare and wonderful All About Romance Desert Isle Keeper, raves ( Suzanne Enoch call ed it "warm witty and fabulous!"; Publishers Weekly Contributing Editor Barbara Vey called it "Amazing," and "delightful") -- but because it's the first book in a series about the lives, passions, adventures and misadventures of the denizens of Pennyroyal Green, Sussex, England, a town anchored by the wealthy Eversea and Redmond families -- whose relations are civil on the surface, but seethe beneath with ancient secrets and grudges and --naturally -- attractions. We'll follow these folks wherever their passions and destinies tak e them -- whether it's London, the gallows, a ballroom, a bedroom, the high seas, or the Sussex downs. I have major plans for these people. :) Hope you'll enjoy their stories as they unfold! You can order it now , if you want
In POP, we meet Colin Eversea, the charming, heartbreaker of a black sheep youngest son of that clan, who manages to at last distinguish himself by doing what no roguish Eversea in history has heretofore done: get caught. The catch? He claims he's innocent. Madeleine Greenway, a daring, beautiful mercenary with a few secrets of her own is paid to rescue him. Passion, adventure, intrigue, and -- of course -- a bit of hilarity ensues. Check out the back cover blurb on my website , or read the excerpt while you're there. The Perils of Pleasure is out now!
What Else?
You might also want to check out my Holt Sisters trilogy. THE SECRET TO SEDUCTION is the most recent book in that series, and it was released in May to gratifyingly wonderful reviews. It concludes our Holt Sisters Trilogy—the story of three sisters separated when they were very young when their mother, the mistress of a beloved English politician, is framed for his murder and forced to flee, leaving them behind. Throughout the trilogy, our heroines—Susannah, Sylvie and Sabrina—find each other again, as well as, of course, love with men as beautiful, passionate, unique (and maddening) as they are. :)
Along the way they do solve the decades-old mystery behind the scandal of their birth. But do they find their mother, the infamous, mysterious, Anna Holt? You'll have to read THE SECRET TO SEDUCTION to find out. :)
What did reviewers think of the other Holt Sisters trilogy books?
On The Secret to Seduction:
TOP Pick! "The final volume in Long's Holt Sisters trilogy fulfills readers' desires for a passion-filled, lively romance brimming over with wit and wisdom. It's time for the last Holt sister to discover her hidden passion, her true love and her siblings. Much to our delight, she does so in a most heartwarming and exciting manner. " --Kathe Robin, Romantic Times BOOKClub Magazine
FIVE ROSES!...a superlative final novel in the Holt Sisters series, and I am truly sorry to see the saga end. ...powerful and evocative.... This book runs the gamut from chuckles to throat-closing tears and I cannot recommend it highly enough. -- Paula Klug, A Romance Review
From RAKEHELL: The final installment in Long's "Three Sisters" trilogy is the best book she has ever written....It's rare anymore to review a romance novel where I can talk about the writing. Often I discuss the characters, plot, and even dialogue. The Secret to Seduction has character, plot, and dialogue in spades, but what will stand out for discerning readers will be the beauty of the language Long uses. -- Cybil Solyn

(read an excerpt from THE SECRET TO SEDUCTION at my website.)

On Beauty and the Spy:
TOP PICK! "Make room next to Julia Quinn and Stephanie Laurens for Long."—Kathe Robin, Romantic Times BOOKClub Magazine

A PERFECT 10!
Profoundly passionate and brilliant."—Marilyn Rondeau for Romance Designs
Top Pick! Ms. Long excels in so many areas of her writing, from her prose, to her dialogue, to her characterizations, that it's hard to single out anything in particular that makes this book such a standout. Everything just comes together perfectly.—Nancy Davis, Romance Reader at Heart
(Read an excerpt at my website.)
On Ways to be Wicked:
Top Pick!" Historical Romance just doesn't get much better than this."—Nancy Davis for Romance Reader at Heart
(Read an excerpt from at my website.)
My first two books aren't part of this series, but both were nominated for numerous awards, too. If you're in the mood, check out excerpts and reviews of THE RUNAWAY DUKE and TO LOVE A THIEF a t my website, too!
Anyhow, I hope you get a chance to read my books if you haven't yet, and let me know what you think. I love meeting readers and authors, so the more friends, the merrier!
What's Next?
The next book in the Pennyroyal Green series for Avon is called Like No Other Lover! (Note: It was renamed from The Dangers of Desire, so if you see that title on Amazon, it's the same book!! Amazon will be updated by mid-March with the new title.) In it, we'll meet Miles Redmond and Cynthia Brightly. It'll be out in November (its official release date is October 28th) I'll keep you updated on the story in the weeks ahead. I've seen the cover...and it's extrarodinarily beautiful. Can't wait to show you!! We'll also have a back cover blurb shortly, and I'll post that when it's ready. I love the story. Hope you will, too!
Like to get to know me a little better?
One quick place to start is my interview with the wonderful Romance Reader at Heart (we did this about..two years ago?), where I talk about my road to being published, "second-book angst," the importance of U2 and The Monkees, horses, and having large, sentient hair, among other things. :).
You can also also meet me at my website, (where you can read excerpts and enter my contest), or feel free to pop into the Julie Chronicles (aka, my blog), where we're usually discussing something earthshaking. I'm contest-happy, too, and I'm always giving away good loot on my website. :) Check out my contest page—this month I'm giving away signed books. :)
I also have a Cafe Press store ,and through the first three months of 2008, I'm donating 100% of proceeds to the Humane Society of the United States . We have some very cute (and amusing, and sexy) t-shirts in there (and you can see one of my readers modeling one on my blog !), so pay a visit, if you're in the mood!

FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS

In the Beginning...
In which Julie Anne Long reveals the secret to building a wildly successful career as a romance author I wrote this article for a guest blog at Romantic Inks—it addresses, in part, the "money" question, and was apparently a real eye-opener for many readers.
~ What to expect (and what you won't expect) when you first get published . This is the text of a talk I gave at the San Francisco RWA shortly after I sold my first book.
Romance Communities:
~ Romantic Inks is a blog established by aspiring romance authors, a great group of gals who commiserate and share tips about writing. Many published romance authors guest here, discussing the ins and outs of the business.

~ Romancing the Blog is another blog featuring published romance authors who post on many different aspects of romance writing.
~ Romance Writers of America is the national organization for both published and aspiring romance authors.
Industry Blogs:
~ Beyond Her Book : Publishers Weekly Contributing Editor Barbara Vey's terrific Romance-oriented blog
~ Miss Snark : The infamously hilarious, informative and mysterious literary agent keeps hapless aspiring authors on the straight and narrow.

~ Evil Editor: Similar to Miss Snark, from an editor's perspective.

My Interests

I'm a San Francisco-based bestselling author of historical romance, including the Holt sisters trilogy—BEAUTY AND THE SPY, WAYS TO BE WICKED, and THE SECRET TO SEDUCTION. Look for my first book with Avon, THE PERILS OF PLEASURE, in February of 2008! Visit my website, where you'll learn I once wanted to be Bono when I grew up (I used to play guitar in bands) and won a spelling bee with the word "ukulele." You can also read excerpts and enter my contest, if the spirit moves you.

I'd like to meet:

Readers! Authors! Musicians! Hugh Laurie! A wish-granting genie! People who love animals! YOU, probably.

Music:

Crowded House (and the Finn Brothers), Elbow, Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake, Sufjan Stevens, Simon & Garfunkel, The Decemberists, Belle & Sebastian, Fiona Apple, Air, Boards of Canada, Leonard Cohen, U2, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Guns n Roses, Debussy, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, John Adams, Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell, Beethoven, American Music Club, Game Theory, 60's British Invasion (The Zombies, anyone?), The Byrds, The Doors, CSN&Y, early Neil Diamond, 70's bands with histrionic male singers (I half jest, but I really DO like the singing) like The Guess Who and Blood Sweat and Tears; Brendan Benson, Chet Baker, Nina Simone, Guided by Voices, Badfinger, The Pixies, on and on and on...lots more later....

Movies:

LOVE movies from the 30's and 40's -- noir and screwball comedies. The Thin Man movies, My Man Godfrey, The Philadelphia Story, His Girl Friday, stuff like that. Give me Cary Grant, Gregory Peck, Jimmy Stewart, William Powell, Katherine Hepburn, Rosalind Russell, Carole Lombard, any day. The Princess Bride, naturally. The Parent Trap. (the original one. LOL.) Blue Velvet. Shakespeare in Love. Say Anything. After Hours. Sense and Sensibility (seen it about 40 times.) Jesus Christ Superstar. Good animation, like the Triplets of Belleville. This is Spinal Tap. Man, this is another question that just sort of...wipes my memory banks clean. This is hard!! Remind me of a few movies that ought to be on my list!! Actually, I just thought of four movies I've seen recently that knocked me out: The Station Agent, Capote, Little MIss Sunshine, and The Lives of Others.

Television:

I watch House. American Idol. Repeats of The Simpsons while I run on my mini trampoline. LOL. I don't have "fancy" cable, just the basic (to my sister's shock and dismay), and I'm pretty much grafted to my computer these days thanks to work, so I just don't seem to watch very much. But I'm told it's practically un-American to not watch Lost, so I'm going to have to get the DVDs. :) Oh, and despite my spotty tv watching habits, I *have* managed to watch and fall in in love with Jon Stewart. I also never miss Ghost Hunters—adore those guys.

Books:

Books!! This question in particular always makes my head pop. I read everything. Well, not EVERYTHING. For instance, I don't particularly enjoy those instructions that come with the bookshelves you buy at Ikea, so I usually skip them. (To my detriment.)
About my books, then? Well, here are some comparisons I've heard from readers and reviewers, if that helps a bit: if you enjoy Julia Quinn, Sabrina Jeffries, Teresa Medeiros, Eloisa James, Lisa Kleypas, Stephanie Laurens, Johanna Lindsey, Judith McNaught, Amanda Quick, Karen Marie Moning, Loretta Chase, Madeline Hunter, Laura Kinsale, Jane Feather, Connie Brockway, Gaelen Foley, Liz Carlyle, Diana Gabaldon—very witty, very passionate and sexy and literate romances—then you might enjoy me. If you're just finding me via MySpace and you're curious, you can start on my books page at my website to find excerpts and reviews.
In addition to the above brilliant and talented ladies, my tastes run the gamut. Jane Austen, of course. D.H. Lawrence. Colette. At the moment, I'm madly in love with Alexander McCall Smith. I love Nick Hornby, A.S. Byatt, David Mitchell, P.D. James, Harlan Coben, Lisa Gardner, Marian Keyes, A.A. Milne, Dennis Lehane, J.K. Rowling, Zadie Smith, Donna Leon, Janet Evanovich, Laurie R. King, Edward Rutherford... James Thurber still makes me laugh until I hurt. Grand ALL TIME favorite books include The Once and Future King, Possession, Gone with the Wind, The Thorn Birds, The Little Prince, The Age of Innocence, Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman... I'll add more as they occur to me. :)

Heroes:

Helen Keller, Martin Luther King, Stephen J. Hawking, Richard Feynman, Nelson Mandela, Oprah Winfrey, Henry David Thoreau, Benjamin Franklin, Gandhi, Al Gore, Bono, Les Paul, more later...:)
