About Me

+
Taking care of my menagerie, staying in the car until the song is finished, playing PS2, imitrex (miracle migraine drug), easy crosswords (30 minutes or less).
-
Coffee slurps, people who knock then immediately open the door without waiting to see if anyone responds, passive-aggressive behavior.
I need to have met someone in person to friend them on myspace, so please don't send me a friend request unless I've met you in real life at least once. Feel free to send messages though! I will write back :-)
Strange how people who suffer together have stronger connections than people who are most content.
I don't have any regrets, they can talk about me plenty when I'm gone.
You always said people don't do what they believe in, they just do what's most convenient, then they repent.
And I always said, "Hang on to me, baby, and let's hope that the roof stays on."

My Interests

I've read the first half of a whole lot of books. I studied Art History and am infatuated with Gauguin. I like his art, too. I run. I'm a feminist. I'm a vegan. I enjoy working. I really like portable electronic gadgets like cell phones, digital cameras, iPods, etc. I like irreverent jokes. I don't like going to bed. I will eat the lemons from your drink if you'll let me.

I'd like to meet:

I'm interested in meeting witty people who can have stimulating conversations. You know, the kind that don't center around yesterday's Oprah.

Music:

Bruce Springsteen, Ryan Adams, Patti Scialfa, Hot Hot Heat, Dar Williams, Ani DiFranco, U2, Bjork, The Magnetic Fields, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Mason Jennings, Joan Osbourne (but I hate the God song), David Bowie, Queen, Counting Crows, Van Morrison, Tom Petty, Outkast, Billy Joel, Hole (nostalgia), Iron and Wine, Thelonious Monk, Aimee Mann, The Shins, The Postal Service, Tegan and Sara, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Madonna

Movies:

Fiddler on the Roof, Pippi Longstocking, Lost in Translation, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, Dirty Harry, Dirty Dancing, Slither, Napoleon Dynamite, and of course, Emperor's New Groove, Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course.
Run-on sentences about recently viewed movies
Sideways: Better than the average Hollywood drivel but still wraps up in a little too neat a bow at the end.
Million Dollar Baby: Brilliantly acted and masterfully directed, so please don't see it if you're unwilling to experience or incapable of accessing someone else's humanity through art because your inane and irrelevant post-movie conversations will piss off people like me.
The Incredibles: Watching this great/funny/well animated movie with a disappointingly lame final 3 or 4 minutes is definitely time well spent, especially because the DVD extras feature an exploding baby.
Hitch: It does what it's supposed to do, which is shut off people's brains and make laughter come out of their mouths.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: I was pleased because the movie was a bit of a character study in addition to being a romance, but I had difficulty with the premise since it was unrealistic without being so out there that I could just suspend my belief.
The Full Monty: I only saw the last half of this movie, but I really liked it because I was expecting nothing more than a slapstick silly movie about naked men and got an often light-hearted set of character studies.
The Constant Gardner: I walked out of the theater feeling like I hadn't actually watched anything because I couldn't quite connect to the tragedies enough to feel them, which means it must be a distant movie because I am basically one big bleeding heart.
Madagascar: Technically, this wasn't a fabulous movie, but I automatically love any movie featuring a hypochondriac giraffe.
Garden State: This movie won't change your life, but it managed to be life affirming without being cheesy, so it's worth watching.
Shopgirl: I liked the book better, but that might be because I read it when it first came out--during a completely different part of my life when perhaps dating someone you call "Mister" didn't make my brain short circuit.
The Sea Inside: This movie caused me to have an existential crisis, and while I don't know if that fact says something about the quality of the movie or the level of my intelligence, I can say without a doubt that this movie is an impressive show of writing, acting, and directing talent.
Slither: Slither is a Fabulous Zombie Movie and is one of the few movies that needs to be in my permanent collection.
Napoleon Dynamite: Every single underdog wins, so there is no way not to love this movie.
Amelie: Like Garden State, only it requires more patience and has much better cinematography.
Broken Flowers: A good film, but don't expect it to be as good as Lost in Translation like I did.
Deep Jaws: This movie boasts a scene in which a grown man playing a boy punctures a water bed with his erection.
The Dicktator: Although the title made me think this movie would be campiness heaven, it's actually a little too weird and bad to be funny.
Trainspotting: AWESOME film, but thank god the DVD offered subtitles.
Me You and Everyone We Know: I think I need to watch this one again to really "get it," which means i think it's a great movie.
300: This movie is about idealistic and/or brainwashed men running about in speedos.
Black Snake Moan: A decent film, but it's not a movie that'll leave you thinking for days.
Borat: So THAT'S what a 300 lb man looks like naked!
Little Miss Sunshine: This is a poignant and hilarious movie in which a whole family comes of age and learns to be a family.
Grizzly Man: This is an unusual documentary because it's heavily biased but completely honest about it.
The Wind that Shakes the Barley: Masterfully acted and well directed, but this movie beat the emotional shit out of me without providing enough of an intellectual payoff to balance the pain.
Knocked Up: According to Yahoo! Movies, critics gave this movie an A-, and although I laughed plenty, I don't think this movie rated the glowing reviews it received.

Television:

My So-Called Life, the Golden Girls, Big O, Family Guy, The Tick (the animated one), The Daily Show, sometimes ATHF, and that's pretty much it. I definitely think my TV serves me best when it's off.

Books:

authors: Milan Kundera, John Steinbeck, Tim O'Brien, Sarah Vowell. poets: Henry Taylor, Galway Kinnell, Robert Frost, e.e. cummings, Ted Hughes, Sylvia Plath, Rainer Maria Rilke. plays: Wit, Our Town, Fiddler, Phantom.

Heroes:

As a policy, I don't have heroes.
