I am here for Friends

About Me

This unofficial site was initiated September 15, 2006 by a fan of Gil's from Minneapolis. It is meant merely to fill the void on MySpace. Please visit www.gilmelle for detailed info, though that site seems a bit neglected since his death. I plan to add more info for the benefit of new fans who may discover Gil here, but not until later in 2007. I would love to correspond with fellow fans.Gil was a recording artist for Blue Note Records from 1952 to 1956. He also composed the soundtrack for The Andromeda Strain and Night Gallery among dozens of others.By the way, only about 10 of the friends here were invited. A large majority has come to this site on their own, and I appreciate knowing there are younger, living fans of Gil Melle out there, all over the world. Thank you. Keep up the good word.

My Interests

Baritone saxophone, composition, inventing electronic instruments, painting and visual art, microscopy, piloting, antique cars and more. He was a man of many passions and talents. Perhaps the best representation of Melle's music can be found on The Complete Blue Note Fifties Sessions (Blue Note 95718), a 2-CD set issued in 1998, now out of print and quite rare. I might also suggest Patterns in Jazz, his final full-length for Blue Note, still in print in Japan.

I'd like to meet:

Gil Melle is deceased.

Music:

Modern jazz, electronica, instrumental.

Heroes:

Alfred Lion of Blue Note Records. Gil has stated his appreciation for the Blue Note Records exec in many ways, including the composition, A Lion Lives Here. Gil was also a near-completist scholar of Duke Ellington.
