When you think of the hip-hop culture admittedly Kentucky isn't the first location that pops into your head. Roughly two years ago, two minds came together to change that. The result was Get It Right Records - an independent label based out of Louisville, with ambitions to cultivate the Kentuckiana area into a hotbed for various styles of hip-hop.
While the independent venture is beginning to make a name for itself regionally, it wasn't always like that tells Co-founder/CEO Jhae. "Being from Kentucky, you're always gonna be branded as somebody with no education, no skills, or whatever. It's like 49 other states look down on you simply because you're from Kentucky. Were here to prove to the world that we can do it just as well as anybody else in the game."
The first step to achieving that goal was hooking up with local rhyme-spitta Bumba B. "I was doing my little small time thing ya know, putting out mixtapes and such for my peoples, it wasn't anything big, but it was enough to be heard. B was doing his own thing, he was known for freestyling around the Ville. Dude was featured on a few local acts here and there, getting a little shine, but he was trying to take things to the next level. Eventually he heard my tapes and he was feeling it so we collaborated on a few tracks. The response was bonkers and after that things just started to snowball."
Two years and about 4 CD's worth of unreleased material later, Get It Right Records is finally ready to lift the curtain and expose its acts. "Yeah, we spent a lot of time getting it right," an emphatic Bumba smiles. "Thats the motto behind the label, get it right. If ya ain't doing it right, forget it why bother? We came to represent KY the right way."
To celebrate the launch of Get It Right Records online, the pair is releasing an onslaught of mixtapes to the streets. "We got mad respect for the peoples who pioneered hip hop in Kentucky, acts like Nappy [Roots], etc," says a stone-faced Jhae. "They're doing the damn thing, but we feel that we needed something to rep that other side of Kentucky. It ain't all about being country here."
