New Album in early '08!
"Immediately gratifying and resourceful pop music," says the Weekly Alibi's Simon McCormack. Performing on stages across the Southwest, The Boom never fails to entertain with its peculiar combination of indie/alternative rock that's heavily influenced by funk, metal and punk. But let's ditch those adjectives, which after years of misuse and overuse have nearly no meaning. Instead, we'll call it Orchestral Pop Rocks, (no typo) contrapuntal layers, dramatic swells, sprinkled with painful, fizzing candy.
With two full-length albums under its belt (2005's "Pink Insides" and 2004's "What Grenade?!?") and a cherry new LP due out at the beginning of next year, The Ya Ya Boom Project! works to prove that you don't have to be obscure to be interesting or dull to be accessible. Instead, at the hands of these New Mexicans, odd experiments become solid hooks adorned with fully landscaped effects and topped with a liberal dose of rowdy stage energy.
It's a blend of Marisa's ever-expanding vocal stylings, sister Monica's textured bass lines, the gorgeous melodic sense of guitarist Carlos and Jarvis's subtle, spot-on drum work. This is a band that likes exploding choruses and thick harmonies. Refusing to settle into a limiting genre is part of what's kept the group fresh to fans over the course of its more than five-year run, making it a staple act in the Albuquerque—and, increasingly, other places, too.
