About Me

Purchase my first album on iTunes
Washington DC native Matthew Flowers has been making music since birth. Son of soul singer Phil Flowers, he studied classical voice and gospel at the prestigious Duke Ellington School of the Arts. From New York cabarets to San Francisco folk clubs to the jazz hotspots of Paris, his musical journey has been rich and diverse. His 2001 release A Perfect Life – a stripped-down collection of folk-soul tracks recorded in one week with Ben Harper tour engineer Josh Roberts – established him as a talented and fiercely independent artist who defied categorization.
Already fluent in French, Matthew relocated to Paris and built a reputation as the hottest soul singer in town, touring Europe with the American Gospel ensemble, doing session work for top European stars and fronting an electro band. All the while, in the background, he was working on his own project. After years of demos, full-fledged band sessions and late-night tinkering in his kitchen, he wrote the song “Happy Baby” and the album began to take shape.
Gospel, electronic, jazz, southern rock, old-school soul… Secret disregards genres and formats to take the listener on an intimate, personal journey, part love story, part rumination on having faith in a fractured world. The album features an adaptation of the instrumental “Gentle Threat” by Gonzales, the musician and producer known for his work with Feist, Jamie Lidell and Seu Jorge. Gonzales played piano on the songs "What I'll Do" and "Do You Still Love Me?", and Matthew returned the favor by contributing vocals to Gonzales’ upcoming record Soft Power.
In 2008 Matthew will be touring Europe as a member of Gonzales’ band, the Together Ensemble, alongside Mocky, So-Called and Katie Moore. It will be a year of high visibility, as he can also be heard on his brother Phil Flowers Jr.’s new album, To Whom it May Concern, and on Modern Incidental, the US debut from Paris rock quartet Neïmo.
