Cookies and Dirt

In the Chicago summer of 2006, Idris Goodwin (formerly of Farm Crew) spoke to a longtime collaborator, producer Saint Pete (Conglomatron), about the idea of forming a live band. As it happened, Pete was already busy at work on such a project with guitarist Dan Feeney. The two had been working together painting houses and spent many days floating ideas about what a live hip-hop group could be. Idris, Pete, and Dan began working on material that eventually became the band’s debut ep. To fill out their sound, Dan recruited drummer Corey McCafferty. The two had been playing together since 2003 in the hybrid electronic/rock and instrumental bands Ark of Limbs and I/O. They quickly landed their first gig at the Hideout, the beloved Windy City dive bar and music destination. The show was well received and Cookies and Dirt has performed steadily in a variety of Chicago venues as well as in Dekalb, IL and Dubuque, IA. Cookies and Dirt performances are a departure from the minimal formula of turntables/CDs/samplers plus MC, invoking the energy of a rock show while remaining strongly rooted in hip hop. The direction of the music is continuously evolving, incorporating disparate elements of rock, jazz, classical, and experimental music. Cookies and Dirt looks eagerly toward the possibilities held by the future.
