-- DJ Whisper -- Bio
Ryan Murrays love affair with dance music began in the hallowed walls of Voodoo in Pitt St back in 1999. As a regular clubber who lived for the music his natural progression was to buy his own turntables and start mixing records!
Since that inevitable day when he finally purchased decks, Ryan has put endless hours of practise into steadily improving his skills and perfecting his style. Whisper built his name and reputation as a trance/techno DJ but as his musical taste developed he started spinjning more and more from the house, electro, tech and minimal side of the musical spectrum. He also believes there is a lot more to being a good DJ than just simply beat-mixing and fading, and therefore he endeavours to keep his sets as interesting as possible through sampling, looping, creating sounds and mashing up tunes left, right and centre! It is this creative flair that today sets him apart from many of the other young DJs in the scene.
November 19th, 2003 saw the opening night of Breed@BJs, and the clubbing worlds introduction to Dj Whisper! It was evident that night, both to himself, and to everyone that witnessed that set, that behind the decks is where he belongs! In the following year he started really carving a name for himself as one of the top up and comers in the Sydney hard dance scene, playing monthly at Breed (now Grooveinc@Breed), and picking up a residency in the final stages of the Iceboxs existence as well as a number of other venues around Sydney, including Space, Rogues, Tantra and Transit, supporting internationals such as Cosmic Gate and Marc Dawn, and playing alongside some of Australias best DJs such as Nik Fish, Amber Savage, Hellraiser (melb), Sanders (melb), Jumping Jack, Nervous, John Ferris and many more. September 2004 saw a huge milestone in his career when he was approached by the promotions staff at sydneys notorious Friday night Plastic and asked to play his debut set supporting none other than Swiss hard trance maestro Dave Joy. The success of this set saw Ryan be called back to play at the club regularly, and also saw him on the bill for Ministry of Sounds Hard NRG 6 tour at Tantra in November of that year, as well as supporting Dj Spoke at Plastic that December.
If 2004 was the year that he made a name for himself as an up and comer to watch out for, then 2005 and early 2006 was when Whisper established himself as a household name in the Sydney Clubbing Scene. His relationship with Plastic went from strength to strength and he was made a resident at the club. This, along with picking up residencies at monthly Grooveinc@Breed and weekly Saturday night Ahead ensured a very busy year. On top of this he played regularly at Progress @ Gas, Daydreams, and at a number of full scale events including Transmission and its corresponding warmup and after parties and he played in Lilyworld at the Sydney Big Day Out! In this time he was billed alongside a huge list of internationals including Dumonde, The Organ Donors, Dj Zany, Dave 202, Technoboy, Luca Antolini, Randy Katana, Proteus, Dark By Design, Scott Bond, Dave Lea, DJ Wag, and Jesselyn as well as playing a back to back set with UK producer/DJ D10 and travelling interstate to support hard trance legend DJ Scot Project.
Recent years have seen Whisper's musical taste diversify and his dj'ing focus more on electro, tech-house and minimal sounds, which is a big change from what he established his name playing, but something he has achieved particularly well nevertheless. Ryan can be seen every weekend now delivering this sound to places such as Sublime's infamous 'Cargo' room, LePanic, Candy's Apartment, MYLK, Diversity, Channel 13 @ The Bourbon, The Burdekin and V-Bar to name a few, and can also be found rocking the house arena at parties like Transmission.
Each time he graces the decks it is easy to see the mark that Ryan leaves on a crowd with his musical awareness, creative flair, technicality, intensity and most importantly love for the music. These characteristics have not gone unnoticed either with Whisper being voted by the members of www.grooveinc.org as the trance dj of the year, and Up and Coming DJ of the year in 2004, and then as the DJ of the Year in 2005. In perhaps his biggest achievement to date he was also named by Australias leading street press, 3d World, as the 2005 Up and Coming DJ of the Year in the magazines annual awards.
