Zacky Vengeance is the left-handed rhythm guitarist of the band. He taught himself guitar when he was 13. Until 'Waking the Fallen', Zacky played Lead guitar for Avenged Sevenfold.Zacky and M. ShadowsThe Rev (short for The Reverend Tholomew Plague) is the drummer and sometimes vocalist for A7X. He attended a Catholic school with M. Shadows, and was kicked out in 3rd grade. He is also part of the side project band, Pinkly Smooth [where he went by the name of Rathead], with guitarist Synyster Gates and members of a surf-punk band called Ballistico, in which he surprisingly plays the role of lead vocalist, and not drums. Before Avenged Sevenfold and Pinkly Smooth, The Rev played in a third-wave ska band called Suburban Legends. Trivia
A large amount of the vocals on Avenged Sevenfold's early demos were done by The Rev. He also provided vocals for the song Lips of Deceit, from Sounding the Seventh Trumpet.Before A7X started making money, the Rev worked and lived in a laundry service. He also used to live in his car.

He is also a member of Pinkly Smooth, a side project with The Rev, for which he also played guitar for. Syn has a very musical background, and attended MIT where he studied Jazz. His parents, Brian Snr. and Suzie are also both well known professional entertainers."I taught Syn to play guitar when he was about ten and for the next ten years he practiced and got better and better. Now he teaches me. It's scary how well he sweeps. Syn and I wrote a song together for the movie "Payback" staring C. Thomas Howell when Syn was about 12. Although Justin Sane played bass for the recording of the band's first full length release, 'Sounding the Seventh Trumpet', he left shortly after for personal and drug related issues and Johnny took his place as a full-time member of A7X. Johnny has roots in Poland, but lives in Huntington Beach, Orange County. He met the guys through guitarist Zacky Vengeance's little brother Matthew, who he went to school with. Johnny is also the only band member that has only one of his arms sleeved.

Great singer - as creative as they come." - Synyster GatesM Shadows was originally in a punk band called Successful Failure, whom he wrote the song 'Streets' for, later performed and recorded by Avenged Sevenfold.He has been with his long-term girlfriend Val DiBenedetto since the 6th Grade, going on for 12 years. Matt wrote the power ballads 'Warmness on the Soul' (Sounding the Seventh Trumpet) and 'Seize the Day' (City of Evil) for her. Val appears in both videos.Whilst performing in the UK, he broke a blood vessel in his throat because of his intense screaming style on albums before 'City of Evil'. Early rumors suggested that this was the reason his singing style changed, but his voice quickly recovered after some surgery to prevent a re-occuring problem, and training from reknowned vocal training coach Ron Anderson. However, M has said in several interviews that he stopped screaming, "because it wasn't what we wanted to do anymore. I could scream, [and even better than before since Ron taught me to scream properly] but it just doesn't fit with what we're playing these days."Ron Anderson, who has also worked with Axl Rose (Guns n' Roses), Scott Weiland (Velvet Revolver) and Chris Cornell (Soundgarden) helped M. Shadows achieve those 'high distorted, gritty whiney low range' vocal characteristics of his idols. Although the change split the fanbase and upset many of the 'hardcore' fans, the new vocal style has made them easily accessible and helped create thousands of new fans, but still retain their creative metal edge.

Matt got his first tattoo when he was 15. Among various other tattoos, he has the cover art from 'Sounding the Seventh Trumpet' tattooed across his chest, and a large Deathbat tattoo across his stomach.M went to a Catholic school with A7X drummer The Rev. He is allergic to grass and played Basketball in high-school. Matt says he'd be playing pro if he wasn't in Avenged Sevenfold.Shadows is noted for regularly dressing with a bandana and truckers cap, Aviator style shades and gold caps in his teeth. He is also sometimes seen with diamond caps on his two canine teeth (such as in the Beast and the Harlot music video).
