About Me

Get Your Own Voice Player Manage ..Urban smooth jazz artist david j. is on the musicians to watch list in the world of contemporary jazz. Known for his silky blend of rich melodies, this artist has graced audiences throughout Southern California's venues from the Pasadena Rose Bowl, Inglewood Market Street JazzFest or Jazz at Drew to the Del Coronado Hotel in San Diego Bay. David j's expressive style connects to audiences taking them on a musical journey of smooth jazz bliss as he combines popular R & B hits with a jazz twist following the paths of saxophonists Kirk Whalum, Kim Waters and Marion Meadows. After playing with a variety of local bands, david j made his debut appearance as a solo artist at the Mo' Betta Jazz and Blues Concert Under the Stars. Opening for jazz great and blues hall of famer Spanky Wilson, david j. left the stage receiving a standing ovation in August 2006. Many members of the audience made requests for his CD. So, david j. is finally putting his eloquent and warm sound on a long awaited CD. It promises to be a mix of "close your eyes, cuddle up and exhale" ballads as well as a few "gotta get up and dance" tunes. Once honored at Los Angeles City Hall and lauded by the late Mayor Tom Bradley as one of Los Angeles' most promising musicians, david j. left the world of jazz and the Los Angeles area in 1986. He concentrated on gospel music becoming the founding director and keyboardist for the People's Church Gospel Choir in Seattle/Tacoma Washington from 1988 to 1990. This classically trained musician's rich musical background provides a deep resource of melodic approaches to music rarely possessed by one individual.Born into a musical family, the Springsfield Illinois native picked up his first instrument, the clarinet, at the age of eleven. Shortly afterwards he bagan playing the piano and by the age of fifteen had joined the Merembloom Youth Symphony in Santa Monica Califorina. Also at age fifteen David began playing the tenor saxophone in the Los Angeles High School stage band as the 1st tenor, doubled on keyboards and received the much coveted titles of "Rookie of the Year," "Best Woodwind" and eventually became the marching band's drum major and Reese Music Scholarship winner. At age sixteen David graduated to the professional ranks as a studio session musician at A & M Records. Speaking in his usual soft and mild mannered tone, the UCLA alumnus and Desert Storm veteran says music is his first love and so it is always on his mind and ingrained in his soul. Influences: david j's musical influences include Kirk Whalum, Stevie Wonder, Marion Meadows, Robert Kyle, Stanley Turrentine, Grover Washington, Joe Sample, Claude Debussy, Bach and his father Reverend Joseph A. Johnson Jr.
Sounds Like: david j's expressive style has on occasion been compared to Kirk Whalum's phrasing. His rich and round tone on the tenor is well suited for the blues style of Stanley Turrentine, while his technical skills allow him to execute high speed runs on the soprano with the grace of Kenny G.
