Berlins most twisted and weirdest weapon is back with a mind blowing full-length release. Old Europe Strikes Back is Magnum 38’s unambigous announcement and personal invitation for all electronic music afficionados, from headbangers to ravers, from sound analysts to noise nerds, to participate in the pleasures and pains of his struggle and fight against boredom and standstill. Sure, this kind of mission requires quite some willingness for autodestructivity (just look at the cover), but what the heck: that is part of the business of making punk electronics. Nice shot, man! Old Europe still has something to say: battery fully charged, all frequencies cleared, needle in the red, fists clenched…
On his new record Magnum 38 elevates his deconstructing and metallic scraping version of electronic noir on a new level. Old Europe Strikes Back still sees a fair share of that clanking, scratching sound and white noise, but Magnum 38 puts more than one foot in new territories. From spheric ambient soundscapes and hysterical disco ravesounds to melodic disco smashhits, (including guest vocals on „Disco Toni“ and „More“) and glam pop, our man with the head wound shows a wide range of styles - all put on the solid base of that edgy, gnarzy sound Magnum 38 delivers in his notorious live shows.
Who is Magnum 38?
Behind the mask of Magnum 38 we find amicable Oliver Greschke, grown up inmidst of gentle foothills and crazy vineyards in Southern Germany, driven into the arms of punk rock in his love-hate-hometown of Stuttgart, further socialized soundwise in Germany’s most notorious Drum'n'Bass hotbed of the 90ies, Mannheim. Magnum 38 is a native of Berlin for six years now. As a graduated social scientist and freelance web programmer and sound designer he is all too familiar with controlling complex structures and the everyday craziness of urban existence. Since 1999 does Magnum 38 provide the appropriate soundtrack on Berlin’s very own Shitkatapult. His live portfolio includes appearances in these renowned clubs: maria berlin, tresor berlin, so 36 berlin, scheune dresden, distillery leipzig, lounge zürich, hive club zürich, nouveau casiono paris, rex paris, super deluxe tokyo.
