Fulani creates a unique brand of Afro-fusion music by combining African rhythms with elements of hip hop and R&B to produce a style of music which compliments his name Fulani which in Swahili loosely translates as 'undefined'. He identifies as Fulani because he would not want himself or his music to be limited to a particular musical or artistic 'box.'From an early age, this Kenyan-born artist otherwise known as Emmanuel Mutsune took piano lessons with his siblings and taught himself to play the drums. While he continued to perform with several rap groups in Nairobi, Kenya at local concerts, it was not until 1999 that recorded his first single, Saira, which earned him the opportunity to perform before a crowd of close to 10,000 people at the 2000 New Year's eve celebration in Nairobi, an event which was also televised locally.Saira highlighted the evolution of his musical style. In this song and others which he would later record, he combined Soukous rhythms with elements of hip hop to create a style of music which compliments his name Fulani (in Swahili, Fulani is a paradox; it could mean specific, yet it could also mean undefined). After coming to Canada in 2001, he joined a gospel choir, the Rhema Chorale, Toronto and sang with the group for close to 6 months. Meanwhile, he continued to write and record more of his own music as he performed solo at several local events. After a chance meeting in 2003, Fulani collaborated with Kenyan-born musician Adam Solomon on a recording and later joined the Juno Award winning musician's band Tikisa as a drummer and vocalist. He has continued to perform locally both solo and with Adam Solomon and Tikisa at events including the Toronto Downtown jazz festival in July 2005.In collaboration with several multi-talented musicians and producers, Fulani has recently completed the recording of his self-titled debut album which he is set to release later this year. Some of the producers he has worked with include Robert 'R.Kay' Kamanzi and Steve Ominde, two accomplished Kenyan producers with the latter having produced a hit song which won a 2003 Kora Award, one of Africa's most coveted awards. In addition to being a recording and performing artist, Fulani is also a filmmaker having directed two documenatries and two of his own music videos. Stay tuned for more on this emerging artist.CLICK HERE TO BUY MY CD ONLINE!
