The R5 features a heavy grasper with a twenty-five-kilo lifting capacity and a fine manipulator arm with less than one-micrometer placement accuracy. The R5 like other astromechs moves around on a three legged wheel system and is outfitted with a holographic projector, arc welder, circular saw, and fire extinguisher. A row of three tiny photoreceptors and sensors replaced the large radar eye found on earlier models. The droids have a one-jump hyperspace capacity, but with modifications and reprogramming, the units could hold six, seven, even ten sets of navigational coordinates in its active memory – and reach as many hyperspace jumps as a result.
Restraining bolts are devices affixed to droids in order to better control their actions and enforce their obedience. A special applicator seals the bolt to a droid. Once affixed, the restraining bolt restricts a droid from wandering off and forces it to obey commands from a handheld control unit.
The bolts, which are spot-welded onto a droid's surface, are paired with an "owner", or "caller," a hand-held device capable of three basic commands. The owner's three settings can call a droid forward, force it to halt, or to enact the tasks that were just verbally spoken to it. A droid will not violate its basic programming when following orders, so the last setting can only be used to carry out tasks within the droid's operating parameters.
