CHRIS INTAFACE

About Me

It all began for Chris Intaface in 1985. 12 years old with a strong passion for the way music moves you when you hear it. He was never a kid that watched too much television, instead he would spend most his free time listening to the radio and his fathers and older sisters records, he realised much later that his dad was into to some serious music.
His dad had a friend who managed a pirate radio station and Chris Intaface was fascinated by the place and spend most afternoons after school hanging around, sitting in on the DJs shows and slowly learning the craft of radio engineering.
Within a few months he was offered a two hour Saturday morning show, not bad for a kid of 12
Presenting the Saturday morning radio show led to buying music, which allowed him to start defining his own style. By the time he was 14 he was doing four shows a week. He would run back from school with his satchel filled with scrunched up bits of paper containing requests from fellow pupils.
By the time he was 15 he was diversifying musically and moving away from the reggae/dancehall side and getting into Rare Groove, Jazz, Funk and House. He also started experimenting with using two turntables but found the limitations on the old equipment used by the station frustrating.
In 1991 the station ceased broadcasting and it was time to move on.
The next few years were spent at several other pirate stations while he developed his love of drum and bass and it was while doing a stint on his first legal station that he realised that Drum n Bass was where his heart truly lay. Being a newcomer to the scene was frustrating as it wasnt always easy to get work but he continued buying music and although he was playing at a few parties and clubs he wanted to do so much more.
By now he was a serious raver and becoming a well known face at Metalheadz, Movement and Fabios nights Speed and Tempo. He was also trying his hand at production and started getting some positive feedback.
It was one night at Movement that he met Brazilian DJs/Producers, Patife and Marky, who invited Chris out to Brazil.
He arrived during carnival and it totally blew his mind. It was the start of a love affair and Chris now considers Brazil his second home. He hadnt realised what a thriving Drum n Bass community existed in Brazil with DJ Patife and Marky at its forefront.
Three weeks after getting back to London he was on a plane back to Brazil, this time with his record box. In April 2002 he was given the chance to play at the famous Club Love in Sao Paulo where Chris describes the reaction of the crowd as emotionally uplifting giving him the confidence he needed, to know he was doing the right thing. The next year his time was pretty much divided between London and Brazil, he had started promoting a night in Camden called Beleza and in Brazil he started playing to bigger and bigger crowds, one night he was asked to replace DJ Zinc of True Players. 2000 Drum n Bass heads went totally crazy and the promoter was so happy at the end of the night that he paid double. He would also be the first international DJ to play in the northeast region of Brazil, Bahia Salvador.
By the time he returned to London in December 2002, he had developed more recognition in the industry and, earned a rotation set in the Bar at the Weekly Movement event located at Bar Rumba in central London. These were exciting times, as he had always wanted to DJ at movement. The following month he was given a fortnightly Drum n Bass show on Londons Breaks FM which he really enjoyed as it reminded him why he had loved radio in the first place.
Unable to stay away, he returned to Brazil and found himself plying to 2000 people again, except this time he was not the fill in DJ, he was the headliner. While he was in Brazil he received confirmation that he would be playing at Homelands, one of the U.Ks biggest dance music festivals. The year before he had been a paying raver and now he was on the VIP guest list and getting paid for it! Chris says playing at Homelands was a big achievement for me, it was amazing. The experience of doing a set outdoors at such a prestigious and well-known event and getting the applause from the crowd at the end of my set, was a real rewarding experience.

He continued to play at Movement, Bar Rumba in the bar on rotation and was also running his own night in Camden,
In September 2003 he was invited to take part in the Kiss 100 pirate Soundclash and was chosen out of thousands of DJs and presenters as one of four finalists to battle it out for their own show on Kiss. He didnt win but was called back to present numerous shows for Kiss 100 covering for DJ Hype and Adam F between 2003 and 2005.
Presenting on Kiss has given him massive support and fantastic feedback from many of the major players in the drum n bass scene and dance music industry. Hes now a familiar name on fliers and has played at such nights as Max Power, Hospitality, Movement, Innerground, Vibe Brazil, The Bass Brazil, Make Poverty History and is a regular at Fabios night Swerve.
It looks like well be seeing a lot more of Chris Intaface in the near future and wish him the best of luck.
