If it wasn't for disappointments, I wouldn't have any appointments

About Me

I'm a California native in self-imposed exile in Durham, NC.

Why? Why not?

I know a little bit about a lot of things and a lot about nothing. I'm an IT Guy by trade, searching for a creative outlet by night. I think I have a super power, but I can't figure out what it is.

If I were a monster, this is what I'd be:

My Interests

movies, baseball, road trips, ignoring stupid people, singing, sushi, tiki, trying to be cooler than i am, kubrick, wine, choral music, braains, decent horror films, dawgs, finding the perfect manhattan, wasting time on the internet, poker, books about everything, thwarting the illuminati, hawaiian shirts, doubles for a dollar more, traveling, thinking thoughts, hitchcock, people-watching, single malt scotch, writing, procrastinating, buffalo wings, braaaaiiinnnnsssss!!!!!

I'd like to meet:

My younger self so I could give him a much-needed ass-whooping

Music:

Most of what I listen to are bands that you may have vaguely heard of: The Flaming Lips, Radiohead, They Might Be Giants, Barenaked Ladies, Devo, Ben Folds, The Eels, Grandaddy. Some are more obscure, like Pizzicato Five or Negativland. Others are more mainstream, like Beastie Boys or Beck.

I like punk rock (NOFX, The Vandals, Descendents, Dead Milkmen, Dropkick Murphys, The Ramones, The Clash) and hip-hop (Foreign Legion, Ice Cube, Eminem, KRS-One, Run-DMC, MC Chris), but am woefully ignorant about both.

I'm a sucker for 80's music (The Cure, Violent Femmes, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, Pet Shop Boys) for the nostalgia factor. I like Tom Jones and Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline. I listen to the choral music of Arvo Part and Eric Whitacre. I like Christmas Music.

I didn't mention Pink Floyd or Prince or Keane or Marvin Gaye or Beethoven, but I guess there's not room for everybody.

Movies:

Halloween

Fight Club, Office Space, Trainspotting, Harvey, North by Northwest, Star Wars (OT), Evil Dead series, The Thin Man, Dawn of the Dead, Touch of Evil, Henry V, Usual Suspects, Fargo, Dream With the Fishes, Swingers,

Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Dead Alive, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, Night of the Living Dead, Return of the Living Dead, 28 Days Later, Pulp Fiction, O Brother Where Art Thou, Band of Outsiders, Chungking Express

The Big Lebowski

Moulin Rouge, Cannibal: The Musical, American Psycho, Requiem for a Dream, Princess Bride, and too many more to list

Television:

The Simpsons, Firefly, 24, Lost, South Park, Sunday Night Baseball

Books:

I don't claim to have the brain for intelligent literature. There are a ton of books I've read and liked, but the following are either recent or memorable enough for me to remember them:

World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War

The Illuminatus Trilogy

Fuck Yes: A Guide to the Happy Acceptance of Everything

Lord Valentine's Castle

Flicker

anything by Tom Robbins

everything by Irvine Welsh

almost anything by John Irving

the Marcus Didius Falco series by Lindsey Davis

the Gordianus the Finder series by Stephen Saylor

the Kinsey Milhone mysteries by Sue Grafton

the Baroque Cycle and Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson

Thoughts on Travel

But first, a story: The Saturday night that Jen and I took our walking ghost tour in Boston, it was just past dark and we were passing the intersection of Beacon and Park Streets. A car full of rowdy ...

Ratburgers!

I finally saw that movie about the kid named Harry Potter who fights a magic-wielding evil foe. Yeah, you guessed it - I saw Troll. This movie has a 3.1 rating on IMDB and is generally panned, and for...

Boston!

Just got back from a weekend in Boston.. Too tired to go into detail now, but I posted a crapload of pics here - mostly buildings and junk, general boring vacation-slide fare. We walked a hell of a lo...

In with the old, out with the new

I could write about the weather, but nobody wants to hear that. The quaint chill of December's holiday season has turned into the endless ice age of January. And that's with the warm spells and all. I...

Children of Men

It's rare that I come out of a movie wanting to immediately see it again, and rarer still that I'll see something twice in the theater during its initial run. After watching Children of Men this past ...

Too much time on my hands

I never thought I would see Bob Hoskins' penis, but that just goes to show how much I know. We watched Mrs. Henderson Presents last night, which was kinda cute and very English. It wasn't the best or ...

Trinity Park after dark

I was walking Sunny Dawg through the 'hood tonight -- after dark, of course, because darkness comes early on these short December days -- and was thinking about the reasons I love my neighborhood. The...

I have mad kitchen skillz

I was just slicing some turkey for a sandwich, when the knife slipped and cut my left index finger. I cursed, went upstairs, got a band-aid, applied the band-aid, and came back down to the kitchen to ...

Movie Review - Return of the Living Dead: Necropolis

"Return of the Living Dead" is one of the best horror/comedy movies ever made, and one of my favorite zombie films of all time. It's got everything you need - zombies, punk rock, great special effects...

Weekend is Over

After sleeping in Saturday morning to try to rid myself of post-travel fatigue, I had a marginally productive weekend - household chores were mixed with movie-watching. We did a lot of cleaning around...
